While darkness might be seen as a friend by some of na- ture’s creatures, I find an exces- sive amount to be oppressive. A few years ago, I was part of a group touring an unused cop- per mine. To give us a taste of total darkness, the guide turned off her flashlight. Some of us quickly experienced difficulty breathing. As overwhelming and scary as such natural darkness might be, there is an- other kind which is much worse. And that in- — the mind and soul of man. sense a decided groping by people in such darkness today as they Srasnble along an inde- cisive path of values, or rather non-values. Some years ago certain voices proclaimed a new morality which turned out to be little more than a cozy accommodation for lots of old im- morality. That route taken by some who have dumped the old morality has turned out to be a disaster. Back in the days when cigarette smoking was much more socially acceptable, one would frequently be asked, “Hey, mister! Gotta light?” Today that query.comes across with a much deeper implication as we struggle along in the lengthening shadows of spiritual darkness. Rev. Glen BACKUS tc Pulpit & Pew St. Peter Lutheran Church The ancient Greeks thought they had discovered a solution to that problem when they be- gan to exercise their reasoning ability. It was for them a definite improvement over being mind- lessly driven by a superstitious adherence to an array of mis- chievous gods and goddesses. The philosopher, Anaxagoras, felt confident in declaring, “All things were in chaos until mind arose and made order.” There is, however, another much more reliable light to fol- low than any so-called light within ourselves. And that is Jesus Christ who said of Himself: “I am the Light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12). It is true, of course, that His light, shining upon us through holy scripture, has a way of exposing our foibles and failings. And that may upset and anger us as it did the Pharisees, those shallow religionists at Je- sus’ time. However, the light emanating from Jesus Christ, who gave Himself as a payment for our sins, has the primary purpose of rescuing and healing our brokenness. Basking in its glow, we are able to see ourselves as loved and forgiven people, precious in God’s sight. And what a difference that can make even in the nooks and crannies of our lives! f next few days. Call We're out to meet you!
