Warfield council urges merchants to drop killer board game Although municipalities do not have jurisdiction over the types of games merchants stock, the village of Warfield will urge local retailers not to stock an item called The Serial Killer Board Game At last night’s meeting, council agreed to send a letter to the Trail Chamber of Commerce, outlining its concerns and requesting they be passed on to any of the chamber’s affiliates who stock games for children. Mayor Bill Trewhella said the game was discussed at the recent Union of B.C. Municipali- ties convention in Vernon, where it was brought up under an emergen- cy resolution Brought forward by the Munici- pality of Burnaby, the resolution said that federal authorities seem unable to stop the game from being distributed, so is asking the Provincial government to step in and stop the distribution and sale The game originates in the United States. Trewhella said the UBCM passed the motion and sent the res- olution on to the Federation of Canadian Municipalities for fur- ther endorsement Serial Killer comes equipped with a plastic bag of body parts — men, women and children — and the ultimate winner of the game is the Player who scores the most “kills. Councillor Eric O'Dell said he hopes all the fuss being made about the game does not work adversely. "I just hope sales aren't encouraged by all the free publici- ty this game is getting,” he said. “That worries me.” Councillor Jim Nelson said that, although he is not against express- ing concern to local merchants, the game should be dealt with at the federal level. “I believe it would be easier to stop at the border if the feds put a ban on importation,” he said. For some of us we might go to any one of the local retail stores in our area. However, there are three stores in Castle- gar which are often overlooked. Not only do they sell quality items, but they sell them at a price that most of us can afford. The three stores that I went into were bright, clean, and all of their items were attractively displayed. There was also a large variety of items to choose from. shops. The people who shop in these stores do not fall in the ‘social assistance’ bracket, as is the widely assumed _ belief “Although the shop is patronized all economics,” Reith said Is there a need in Castlegar for three answer is clearlyyes. thrif shops? Parr also said that “since September 1 there have been 14 families that have used the food bank” and also that “business was as good as expected.” Each shop serves a separate purpose from the other two ‘Castlegar is a wonderful community and there Is definitely a need.’ — NETTIE STUPNIKOFF Treasure Shop The clerks were both helpful and courteous. Best of all these stores donate their earnings directly back into the same community that supports them. In this age of consumer awareness, they also provide the means to recycle goods that until a few years ago were quite often just tossed in the garbage. If you want quality clothes at a great price, the Treasure Shop, St. David's Thrift Shop and The Salvation Army Thrift Shop are the stores that can offer all of this and more. I had the privilege of visiting each of these shops this week, and I can tell you I was greatly impressed by the cheerful atti- tudes and surroundings. The clothes are reasonably priced, clean, and neatly folded, or hung. Men's suits can sell for as little as $10 to $15, and dresses are priced from $3 to $5 Officials from all three shops agree that there is a great need in the Castlegar area for thrift For up-to-date TV listings look to the Sun! According to Nettie Stup- nikoff at The Treasure Shop, Castlegar has been extremely kind in donating clean, repaired items. “Castlegar is a wonderful community and there is definite- ly a need.” It has been stressed by all three shops that more donations are always welcomed and need- ed, especially with Thanksgiving and Christmas coming up. The funds received from the sale of clothing and other items will help with the Salvation Armmy’s food bank, the Treasure Shop's hospital donations and St. David’s donation to the Legion's hamper fund.
