In His firet years of driving, from 1954 to 1967, he drove what used to be known as Greywolf Pass which was a treacherous peice of road even at that time. FRANK'S SHARPENING SERVICE (Behind Castle’ Theatre) 365-7395 Several Incidents Reported to Police A weekend of varied inci- dents has been reported by local RCMP. Late Friday morning, Clarence Geisler reported his private garage in Robson had Sokolowski and Helen Keillor; ‘ been unlawfully entered. Police lawfully entered ‘and $150 in cash stolen, The matter is under: in- vestigation. A juvenile driver sustained minor injuries after a 1974 Toyota left Highway No, 3 two miles west are i this incident along with a report received two hours later of a security light at’ Stanley Humphries Secondary School having been shot out with a firearm. Saturday police were in- formed that the office of the Castlegar Hotel had been un- of Castlegar and rolled re-- sulling in an estimated $3,000 damage. A passenger, also a juven- ile, sustained a bump to the head. The car was owned by John Kavaloff. One Man's: Opinion Take Transportation By Fred Merriman Wants Land. Removed From ‘Gov't Freeze Land owners in the Koot- My pet peeve of transportation. I cannot find a place to park. There is a steady stream of traffic on 7th Ave, and Columbia . . . and according to the senior information officer at.the Dept. of Highways, more than one billion gallons of gasoline and diese! fuel was consumed in British Columbia in 1975, The provincial government estimates gasoline tax revenue for 1977 at $176 million which, interestingly : enough, almost exactly equals the amount they intend to spend on highway building and maintenance, Transportation is big business supreme. People. have’ this great need to move around from palce to place and the favorite way is by automobile, I'am worse than most people, because I have two cars and, if Thad my way, I would also own a four-wheel drive truck and a van and a motorcycle and a motorhome, Somebody out there has found our need and is filling it. I think it is unfair, When is someone going to come up with away to the enays are constantly asking for, release ‘of property from, the provincial agricultural land re- serve, which was imposed .by the NDP government to save farm land in B.C. While the regional district. took: part in drawing up the” agricultural plan for this area, it does not involve itself in ap- peals to the land commission. Applications for release are re- ceived by the. district and passed directly on to the com- mission, ; Citizens wishing to object to any application should make a submission direct to the land move people about without them di environment, health and most certainly their wallets? I checked with the gasoline bulk stations in Nelson last year and was amazed to find that $4 million of gasoline was used in that city. Castlegar cannot be far behind. Yet everybody is pleading poverty and cutbacks, I contend that if Merriman and others like me would park the hungry beasts or turn them over to the junkyard and either walk or take a bus, we would all be richer and healthier and.happier for it. Just one small problem, though. The trantportation (auto- motive business) is so big, we are all working for it. If we all stopped driving, the wheels of Detroit and Tokyo would grind to a halt and we would be walking ~ the bread lines. . : I -can see only a gradual solution to the problem: car pooling, rental car clubs, alternative transporta- tion, Fred Merriman selling one of his cars.and more . bicycle paths, The most effective way, I know, to stop the Giant is by cutting off the gasoline supply. Raising the price of gas will not slow the Giant because he isa thirsty beast and you tell me how we can possibly keep ourselves from drinking. I don't want to spoil your day, but in my opinion, itis big business and we are all part of that business, I was surprised to see that none of the major: oil companies pay'income tax and that they are good contributors to the national political parties. But the thought does frighten you when you realize that the automotive industry and the related oil business 5 so big nobody can stop it but Mother Nature when she The. applications for Febru- ary, follow: ‘Approximately 50 acres at.
