Helped Defeat Cambridge ‘Local Man Rowing at Oxford Michael Moran By GREG JOYCE 'Nelson News Sports Editor Michael Moran has come a long way since he started com- ° petitive rowing at Brentwood College on Vancouver Island in his final year of high school. Now 22, Moran added ano- ther feather to his oar last week when he helped Oxford defeat Cambridge by seven lengths ih the 128rd university boat race on the River Thames. How did Moran, a native of Castlegar, work his way onto the prestigious Oxford eight for the classic four-mile race down the English river? The long climb began in 1969 when he began a three- year stint at Brentwood Col- lege, near Duncan. But it wasn't until his final year at Brentwood that Moran began to demonstrate his prowess asa future world-class rower. After capturing the school- boy title in B.C, in 1972, Moran Don't Pay Too Much... or too little Yer be glad you Kokanee Tax Service 274 Columbia 365-2416) House, URGENTLY REQUIRED uplex or Apt. and the Brentwood crew travelled to St. Catherine's and managed to row away with the Canadian Schoolboy Champion- ship. - He entered the University of British Columbia the fol- lowing autumn and began work on a BSe, degree with the major emphasis in the field of cell biology. S Among his accomplish- ments while studying for four years at UBC were rowing ap- pearances at the 1973 Canada Games, a bronze medal at the Pan-Am Games (1975) in Mexico City and last, but not least, a trip to England last summer where he and his rowing mates won the Henley Steward’s Cup. His rowing ability well- established, Moran applied and - was accepted into. Oxford’s Cable College and began. his formal studies in physiology (he is not discounting the . pos- sibility. of medical schdol) in October, 1976, Oxford, however, has dozens of superb rowers and Moran, while playing an in- tegral part of Cable College’s rowing teams, had one further tryout to undertake before be- coming a part of the No. 1 Oxford team. Welll Well! The column J have been looking for for the past ‘five months has finally turned up. This will be the last blurb of the 1976-77 season and it is with somewhat mixed feelings that I'sit tapping it out. As usual it has been somewhat of a mixed experience with the usual ups and downs, successes and failures but, once again, the plus factors have finished on top. . Perhaps the greatest bene- - fit I have had from these weekly notes has been the old friends I have been able to ré- tain and the new ones I haye -. been fortunate enough to col-- tect. When I'am stopped on the street with the remark "I really enjoyed your column in last week's paper” it sort of leaves me with the feeling that it is all worthwhile and the doubt that I might not continye is resolved, for a while at least. Typing out these com- ments is not really a‘chore. In " fact, once I sit down and get started I get.a lot of ‘quiet’ (enjoyment out of “doing it. ’ Phere‘has béen the odd ‘time 1: have been left with the’ im- pression that someone or other has not been too well-pleased with something I have written, If this is so, I am sorry, for I have never intended to say anything that could offend. - ‘The-success of the curling Now that is out of the way there area couple of items with which to close the column. First, the serio-social get to- gether between the ladies of the Afternoon Curlers and the cluband the young-at-heart seniors with whom I.have been associated for the past four years has been the sole object of this en- deayor. : Now I am stepping down from the. presidency of the Pensioners Curling Club but will still be in there helping to Castlegar News keep it the success’ it has proved to be. I also hope to be able to keep you posted on the happenings of that body when next November rolls around. In the meantime I’ hope that each and every one of you will have a real good summer and be able to do some of the things -you have’ always ‘wanted “to but‘inéver “got: around to.
