April 3, 1988 AN EASTER WISH A special er wish to wan. THOMAS for always bringing us flowers The Ladies at the Castlegar News Pulpit & Pew By BARRY WERNER Full Gospel Fellowship This is the day that the Lord has made. It is a day of Grace. Hebrews 10:9 says, “He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second.” The writer of Hebrews sets out to convince the Jews, especially believers that the ceremonies, demands, sacri- fices and old ritual of the law was no longer necessary. The reason was that they had been superceded by an order of a vastly higher nature. When an old order is superceded it no longer has a good reason to exist. Its power is rendered inv The old covenant with its ceremonies of the law were that of an external obedience. This has been abolished. Jesus is the end of the old economy Jesus is the beginning of the new order also. Let's not forget that it cost Jesus Christ his very life that we can enjoy this new HAPPY ANNIVERSARY . . . Friends and relatives gathered recently ta honor Borghild and Gunnar Selvig on the occasion of their Golden Wedding Anniversary. There is nothing that you can add or take away from the finished work of Christ. His death and resurrection is an established fact. What you must do is choose. You can believe that Jesus Christ did all of this for you or you can reject Him. Why don’t you accept Him into your life right now. This is the most important decision you could ever make. The Lord Jesus Christ is risen and alive. Only he can give you the new life and freedom you are longing for. Jesus deserves our worship. He is risen indeed. Forest Service is carrying out a progency test — a comparison of seedling growth of selected trees — of Douglas firs in the West Kootenay to help identify the best parent trees for use in seed orchards. The seed orchards produce mass quantities of gene- tically improved seeds for regeneration. The test also helps to determine the ‘breeding value’ of the parent trees for cross-breeding to produce a second-gen eration of improved trees. Last spring, seedlings from 200 specially selected Douglas fir parent trees throughout the West Kootenay were planted at a test site above Wilson Creek, five kilometres north of Rosebery. Their growth is now being carefully monitored to find out which seedlings grow best. After six years, the “winners” will be selected. Then the parent trees, whose progeny show the best performance, will be used to reproduce more seedlings to reforest logged sites throughout the region. The Wilson Creek test site is one of five in the Kootenays. This total includes two more that are being established in the Arrow Forest District: one at Erie Creek, west of Salmo, and a second site at the Wilson Creek drainage, Several sites are used so that seedling growth can be compared under a variety of conditions to ensure consistent performance by the selected progeny. The best trees selected are those that grow well on a variety of sites. The process began with the selection of the most desirable parent trees — Douglas firs showing dominant height, good form with little stem taper, and fine branching. This was done over the last three years. These trees were marked with stripes of red paint around the trunk and were given an aluminum tag. Branch tips or “scions” were clipped from each parent tree, grafted to root stock, and planted at the forest service's Kalamalka research station at Vernon, These grafts have the same genetic characteristics as the parent trees and will be used in place of the originally selected parent trees in future breeding. Seeds were obtained from the parent trees by tying white kraft paper bags around the developing cones. In the fall, when the seeds were ready, the trees were climbed and the bags containing cones and seeds were removed. The bags protected the cones and prevented seed loss when the mature cones opened. The seeds were then sorted until needed to grow the seedlings that were planted at the progeny test sites. The.parent trees that are producing the best seedlings are now being singled out. This enables the researcher to determine which of the grafts planted at the Kalamalka research station, should be kept and which should be discarded. “ The interior tree-breeding program began with spruce in 1967, but due to the area's diverse forests, particularly in the Kootenays, the program was expanded to include lodgepole pine in 1975, Douglas fir in 1982, white pine — in a co-operative effort with the federal government — 1985, and western larch in 1987.
