But some doctors and fitness ex- perts are concerned that young bodies may not be able to handle the stress associated with training for distance events. “*We all talk about the benefits of activity for children and adults, yet we have to be mindful of possible risks,"’ says Dr. Oded Bar-Or, one of the authors of an article on distance running and children. The article, published in the jour- nal of the American Academy of Pediatrics, concludes that if children enjoy the activity and appear LOST MISSING — female golden retriever puppy, 2 months old, Shoreacres area Please return — we miss her. 359-7741 3/94 SET of keys, dowentown oreo, — leather case. 365. 7782. 3/% by it, there is no reason to stop them from training for and en- tering distance events. The article is intended to edcuate doctors and other experts about potential risks of distance running. Distance running was singled out for study because ‘‘as a mass ac- tivity, it’s perhaps the most popular among the whole population — FOUND white-collar, middle-class, affluent people,’’ said 2 BLACK kittens (possibly part Siamese) found at Brilliant. 365-8063 3/94 Bar-Or, director of the Children’s Exercise and Nutrition Centre, af- filiated with McMaster University FITNESS children to express themselves in a way many do quite well. But they should take certain precautions.”” The nature of distance running — working the body in non-stop, sweat- filled activity — leaves a person open to more risks than someone involved in activities such as baseball or foot- ball, he said. “And children do not have the same ability as adults to control their body temperatures. They can’t do it as effectively.’’ In distance events such as five- bs 10. runs and events, “‘the body generates a lot a heat and you have to dissipate this heat,"” Bar-Or said. ‘‘If you don’t, the heat is stored in the body and may lead to heat-related illness, the most severe form of which is heat stroke, which is often fatal. “Children don’t dissipate heat as easily because they don’t sweat as much as adults.”” The paper also pointed out other possible dangers, such as overuse in- juries and sports-induced anemia. Overuse injuries include stress fac- tures, tendinitis and knee and ankle problems, caused by long-term, repetitive pounding that puts stress on bones and joints. “Years ago, we didn’t see this in Pediatric literature, but we're seeing more of it now, so clinicians should consider it more when they’re treating children with these problems,"’ Bar-Or said. Bar-Or said the pediatrics academy had been asked by educators and other exercise professionals to recommend a safe level of com- petition for children. “But we really cannot pinpoint any distance for competition. If (there is) any damage, it is usually the result of cumulative training — not the result of one race, but of months and years of competition and training. “It’s up to those clinicians to keep a certain level of suspicion if they see (overuse injuries) in competitors.”* SEALED TENDERS for the construction of o fire hall in Electoral Area J of the Regional District of Central Kootenay will be received by the undersigned under the following terms REGIONAL DISTRICT OF CENTRAL KOOTENAY INVITATION TO TENDER CONSTRUCTION OF FIRE HALL One fire hall is 10 be constructed in the Ootischenia area of Electoral Area J The fire hall will be constructed of wood frame, cement block, metal, pre. cas! concrete or any other acceptable building matgriol or combination thereot A 10% bid bond will be required Tender torms, construction drawings and specifications may be obtained by depositing $25.00 with the Regional District of Central Kootenay at 601 Ver non Street, Nelson, B.C.
