Road hockey, a_ pick-up game played by boys and girls in driveways and roads across the country, just became orga- nized in Castlegar. Can a players’ union be far behind? A dispute over the proceeds from hockey cards? A strike? It might be a little early for all that yet as the five-team Castlegar Junior Road Hock- ey League kicked of its inau- gural season with a full slate of games on Easter Weekend. For players in Grade 11 and under, the league has teams representing various sections of the city — as signified by club names — and plays games on parking lots, roads or school yards of the home team’s choice. : With two wins and no losses Highland Drive and Kinnaird lead the way after the first weekend, while Downtown is 1-1, Woodland Park is 1-2 and Blueberry is 0-3. The top four teams make the playoffs. This year, if the team is go- ing to win the provincial title, or even approach that goal, it has to do battle with more than its competition, according to coach Barry De Paoli. Hughes, Ryanna Westoff and Angie Stooshnoff are new members on a team that has only Jaclyn Kalesnikoff and Christina Ev- dokimoff returning from last year’s edition. Returning players include Jeff Evdokimoff, Ryan Vatkin, Marcel Dusseault and Mitch Stooshnoff. “We have a lot’of good ath- letes, we just don’t have.a lot of tennis experience, but they pick things up pretty quick,” De Paoli said. De Paoli will find out just how his 14-member team stacks up against the compe- tition in its first tournament of 3 season April 29 in Kimber- ey. “We're pretty solid and con- sistent on the guys side where- as with the girls I think our lack of experience could hurt us a bit,” De Paoli said. Like last year, SHSS has the only tennis team in the West Kootenay, “so we're at our usual disadvantage in terms of competition this year.” To keep in game form De Paoli is setting up local match- es with former team members. Two other former members, Jim Muller and Trish Merri- man, are serving as assistant coaches with the chub this sea- son.
