We'll start out with the Ladies' Curling Club results for their first competition of the 1986-87 season, completed just before the Christmas break. This competition in which they try for the Cominco Cup was won by Dorothy Fines backed up by Mary Vickers third, Mary Bruce second and Dorothy Beetstra lead. In second place was the Edie Harasin foursome. Edie was backed up by Dottie Albo at third, Irene McCormack second while Viv Thompson and Tina Drake shared lead duties. If we never knew it before we learned a lot about how good these women are at our Christmas party. The teams were mixed and I played two teams skipped by women. Jn the morning game I was drawn against Irene Dunlop's rink and we won that because she didn't get too much help from her rink mates and maybe Irene didn't do as well as she might have. But in the second contest I was drawn against Dorothy Fines and it didn't go the way I had hoped it would and we came out on the short end of the score. Dorothy asked me before we started how I would handle her rink and I said, "Oh, I'll just heckle you and throw you off your game," but it didn't work too well. I learned an excellent lesson in how you play the game in the ladies style. Incidentally, Dorothy topped the charts as she won both her games in a points competition. As I said last week, we've had some good parties in previous years and this year was no exception. The food was good, as were the drinks and the competition and the talk among both sides was animated. I would be inclined to call it great. Now it's that time of the year to hand out New Year's greetings so here goes. To Rick Chobanuk, my wishes for you and your Warriors, may 1987 dawn bright and beautiful. I know they say it's lonely at the top, but I think you have the stuff to do the job. To my opposite number on the Trail Times. Look forward to a good year in 1987 Bert, may your worst problem be small typographical errors and your best, a good season for On the Sidelines. To the editor and the staff of the Times newsroom, my best best to you all in 1987, especially Nancy. To all those people who take the time to ·read this column, I hope I can continue to interest you with what I write and shall do so during the coming year, may you all live as long as you want to and never want as long as you live. To those members of the Trail Retirees club who entertain me every Wednesday morning during the curling season. I watch their games as I wait for my bus to take me back home. To the new president of .the Rossland Legion, Allan I would like to say I hope you have a good year at the helm and we wish you continued good health and happiness. To all those people who will join · me on the executive of Branch 14, may we have a good and prosperous year head in 'P/1. To all the minor hockey players around our arena wherever you may be, a good season to you all and I predict and hope that you'll all grow to be great players and fine, upstanding citizens after your playing days are over. To all those m(JS( picked upon members of the · sporting fraternity, referees, may you all call 'em right as you see them, everyone won't agree with all your decisions but if you know in your own mind you were right that's the only way to go. . Not everyone agrees with the way our city is run, it would not be natural if they did, but Jackie and all city council members, have a good 1987 and may all your judgments be honest ones, anyway.
