I was to interview Sammy and come back with a story that is if she didn't turn me into a slithering snake, or worse yet a warty frog! The shadows of the parking tot Seemed to be darker than usual. Was that something I saw lurking in the ominous blackness? A thunderous noise exploded in the cab of the truck. Struggling frantically to open the door I real- ized the perilous noise I had heard was my stomach growling in protest. In my supreme agita- tion about interviewing the old soothsayer I had neglected to eat supper. I didn’t even get to enjoy a last meal on this earth, (in human form at least) My knuckles tapped timidly on her door. Maybe it was the wrong room, or the wrong hotel, maybe the wrong city (I hoped (WED (THU) (1.4 )[15} ocronex SEXY! MAGICAL! THRILLING! As I started to tip toe away the door opened and I realized that this could not possibly be the right place Standing at the door was a trim, young, and smiling woman. On a closer look there was not a sign of a mountainous wart or a wiry hair sprouting defiantly out of it. “Hello, my name is Sammy. Come on in.” Reluctantly my feet carried me forward into a surprisingly well lit room, complete with kitch- enette and comfortable looking beds. My eyes scanned the room for the inevitable black cat, but to no avail. There wasn’t even‘a black cockroach to strike fear into my heart Sammy gestured for me to be seated in an inviting looking side chair. A quick glance at the table disappointed me. Not one crystal ball in sight. However, I did see.a deck of tarot cards Feeling decidedly more relaxed, our conversation pro- gressed to innocuous topics. “My name is Karen,” I said. “I know,” she replied. ‘Wow! She really was good! “You told me your name when you called,” she finished. The information gleaned from her that evening banished in my mind, at least, any pre-conceived notions I had about psychics. Sammy believes she was psy- chic as a young girl, a fact that she did not recognize at the time She also believes we are all born with psychic abilities ~ “We can all tune into that ener- gy, but we're not encouraged to use it. It took me a lot of years to believe in my own premonitions and abilities.” Sammy has been studying parapsychology for over 26 years on an ongoing process. She has also studied numerology, tarot cards palmistry and psychometry - the study of auras. She was quick to inform me that she is not a fortune teller, nor is she a band-aid “The ultimate decision is your own. Let me give you a little demonstration. When is your birthday?” The month, day, and year of an individual's birth add up to a number, and each number in numerology has a significance My number was nine “Number nine brings the humanitarian part of us. You would do very well in social work, working with the public or nursing, something along that line. You are very empathetic, however you don’t take your own advise very well. Her home base is Vancouver, although she has been coming to Castlegar on a rotational basis for about five years. “The response here has been tremendous, and I have a regular clientele that I read for when I am in town,” she said. Sammy estimates that she logs 55,000 miles a year on her vehi- cle and reads for about 2,000 peo- ple a year. She has clients from as far away as the Cook Islands and London, England. “I have read for millionaires, and I have read for people of less- er income, and I can tell you that the multimillionaires have some of the same problems as a woman on welfare does.” “I sometimes read for my fam- ily and for close friends, but I read differently for them. I am too close to it. It is too draining at times. Everybody goes away with a piece of me. I have leamed how to switch myself off or on com- pletely.” Sammy is certified in parapsy- chology in the United States. She also had a regular T.V. and radio series when she lived in Kelowna and will again be hosting a T.V. Series in Vancouver in January. She also gives telephone read- ings from her office in Vancou- ver. Her toll free number is 1-800-421-6766 and she is hop- ing to return to Castlegar in February. Next year, if the editor asks me to run up and see Sammy you can bet I will....but it will be for a reading, not an interview. Financial markets hate uncertain- ty and instability. While I still have faith in Canada as one of the best places to live over the long term, I fully expect turbulence from time to time. But barring disaster, we should survive rea- sonably intact. In the best of all possible worlds your financial plan is set up so you have - or will move toward - these basics: THE DOLLAR. You have U.S. dollar invest- ments - U.S. dollar deposits in Canada, a U.S. account south of the border, stocks or bonds denominated in U.S. funds, per- haps even some real estate in the US. As I write this, the Canadian dollar has lost almost a dime against the U.S. dollar in the past year. Hedging your bets with some U.S. investments is particu- larly important if you often visit or deal in the U.S. INTEREST RATES. Your interest-bearing invest- ments have staggered maturity dates. If interest rates go against gravity and our fragile economy, you will have some term deposits, bonds and so on that mature over the next few months. You can then renew them at the _ rates. On the other hand, if rates set- tle back once the world feels more confident in Canada, you will be glad the rest of your money is still locked in at the higher rates in effect when you made those investments. DEBT. You have no or low debt - or debt with the flexibility to refi- nance if rates go lower. Having no debt gives you the most stabil- ity. You can then borrow when the time is right to buy a home or make and investment. Nobody can predict future interest rates with absolute cer- tainty. Read what the experts Say) a return to lower rates in a stable .S./world, but the risk of higher rates to support the Canadian dollar or otherwise sta- bilize fi ). Then low or no costs in case rates tum down. If you can gamble and afford to make higher payments in case rates rise, stay with a variable mortgage or line of credit in the hope that the storm will soon be over and rates will fall again. STOCKS AND BONDS. You hold mix stocks with a long term history of growth in both value and dividend pay- ments. Unless you are an astute trader, you chose these stocks with the idea of keeping them for years. If you are a bit of trader, you might be watching for some real bargains to be tossed up by the turbulence: quality stocks at low ices. While (government, corporate) bonds Pay a fixed return, their value rises when interest rates fall and vice versa. Again, a mix of short term and long term bonds can help hedge your position. Many people invest in the stock market through mutual funds, whose managers decide what and when to buy and sell. Although past performance is no look at your own situation. . If you have debt, especially a mortgage, and the higher pay- ments produced by higher rates would push you over the edge financially, lock in to give your personal and financial peace of mind. for the maximum flexibility to make extra pay- ments and even refinance with Small Business Week of future results, fund managers who have survived and even profited during past stock market upheavals hopefully will do so again. Holding stocks and bonds (or mutual funds) with an offshore base gives you further diversifica- tion. The economics of Europe, Asia, South America and so on are hardly affected by Canada’s Celebrating the spirit of entrepreneurship Few nations in the world are more entrepreneurial than Canada. The ability of a large number of these firms to innovate rapidly and to create jobs has made small and medium-sized businesses of the important driving forces behind this country's prosperity," said Sandy Highet, Regional Vice- President:”"The commitment and determination of entrepreneurs pulled the country out of the recession of the 1980s and this same entrepreneurial spirit will be responsible for the future growth of our economy into the 90s and beyond.” To celebrate the contribution of small business to the economy, the Federal Business Develop- ment Bank and the Canadian Chamber of Commerce are orga- nizing the 13th annual Small wooden toys during their open house on Thursday, October 15th at 2000 Columbia Avenue, Castlegar. REAL ESTATE. Like the stock market, property is a long term investment. Values and rentals can be affected by ref- erendum turmoil, especially if the economy suffers and there are wild interest rate swings. But also consider demographics and local conditions to help you decide what, where and when to buy, hold or sell - in Canada and possibly abroad. WORK. Do what you can to make your job as secure as possible. Look at starting or developing a sideline business for further income diver- sification.
