Page 4A The Castlegar Sun Wednesday, May 31, 1995 MICKEY KINAKIN Too many days, says trustee KAREN KERKHOFF Sun Staff Most parents dread the words “pro-D days” For some, the words conjure up images of teachers out on the golf course or in front of the tele- vision eating bonbons while chil- dren drive their parents crazy. But nothing could be further from the truth Ata recent Castlegar schoot board meeting, trustee Mickey Kinakin voiced the concem that some community members believe there are “far too many of these days” But district superintendent Everette Surgenor said that pro- fessional development days, or non-instructional days, haven't increased in number. For the last three years the school calendar has included five pro-d days per school year. As well, there are two com- munity interaction days sched- uled in which the community and educators share information pRiiee. 1995 GEO TRACKER CONVERTIBLE 4X4 1.6 L, 4 cylinder, 5 speed $15,980 or LEASE $332/M0.° "See dealer for detalte IKE BRAGA ‘Sales & (using Representa ve, CASTLEGAR: 365-2296 TRAIL; 368-9134 NELSON:352-1614 2880 Highway Dr,, Trall,8.c. viR273. 7 spiel Telok} lelhakel DINE IN good home-style and seniors portions are only are tocated in downtown the Castlegar beside Fields has! Saturday, you'll find the pro-D and knowledge Surgenor said he's aware of the misconception in the commu- nity about the days, but wonders how that misunderstanding can be changed “The days are still viewed by people as days off. I don't know how to change that perteption.”” In fact, Surgepor said pro-D days are mandated by the Min- istry of Education and instructors across the province are required to participate in functions sched- uled for those days. Because the face of education is changing so quickly, Surgenor said that many of ‘hose non- instructional days are spent grap- pling with change within the education system. Other such days are spent preparing for school accredita- tion or dealing with internal issues. And for parents who insist that it appears as if students are spending fewer days in the class- room, Surgenor pointed out that in fact, there are two more — instructional days in 1995/1996 than there were in 1993/1994 This year there are 194 man- dated instructional days, which Surgenor said will remain the same for the next three years. Ramsey was responding to a letter from council expressing concer about the proposed sin- gle regional hospital society with two campuses: one in Trail and the other in Nelson. Council suggested that Castle- gar has been “forgotten” in the pact with Trail and Nelson. In its letter to Ramsey, council Says it is “disturbing” that the the new twin-campus model | ignores three years of “The fiscal realities clearly indi- cate that a single site is the most workable solution and will pro- vide the best quality health care.” Council said the city doesn’t “endorse” the new deal. “Services under this scheme will remain fractured and efficien- cies of personnel, equipment and space will be lost, thus adding to} costs which in turn reduce service delivery opportunities. Council suggests the move to a twin-campus model is political- ly motivated. “The city of Castlegar is con- cerned that this community is being forgotten and that what really counts is trying to achieve political correctness in Nelson and Trail. ‘Castlegar can be sac- rificed in this scenario’, seems to be the prevailing notion. Hope- fully, this is not the case.” Council — for a meeting with Ramsey and health ministry officials “to “ briefed on exactly what has been offered by the government and what will hap- planning and the independent Rowlands’ report. Council says the new model also fails to rec- ognize Castlegar and the “fiscal realities” of health funding. “The new deal of a two-cam- pus regional hospital has not worked in other parts of the province and to think it would succeed in the West Kootenay is naive,” council says in the letter. pen in the fe future.” But Ramsey didn't offer to meet with the city. “While I appreciate that any discussion of amalgamation by these two hospitals would be of considerable interest to Castle- gar, it is really a matter that these two facilities first must pursue,” Ramsey said. He suggested the ministry's role is to “facilitate the process”. SuperValu and The Castlegar Sun Wednesday, May 31, 1995 Page 5A Are you free tonight?
