As of last Thursday, Pellerine and wife Veronica had run the Lion’s Head Pub in Robson for five years. The idea for the Lion’s Head came to Pellerine while touring in his British-born wife’s homeland. Through visiting numerous English pubs, the thought of adding a little bit of Europe to the Crossroads of the Kootenays was something Pellerine liked. “I think that sort of fostered something in my mind,” he said. “I wanted to copy something from Europe.” But any dream of opening his own pub would stay just that as Pellerine continued to earn a living as a school teacher. That idea didn’t disappear, though, as Pellerine took a one- year leave of absence from the school system in 1986 to pursue his pub dream. “I thought it was a good idea,” he said. “An English style neighborhood pub in Canada.” Although he did return to school, Pellerine’s stay was short-lived; and the rest is history. “I just pulled the plug and that was it,” he said. “I haven't regretted it.” To some, the idea of a watering hole away from the city might seem a little odd, though Pellerine says the whole idea behind a pub is to attract the local customer. , “The concept of any neighborhood pub is you establish” it in the neighborhood,” he said. “A neighborhood pub _ is supposed to be within walking distance,” added Veronica. With the emphasis on neighborhood, the Pellerines searched high and low for just the right spot, and Elmer believes they have found it. “We looked at several locations,” he said. “This is where the traffic flow is. “I think we did our homework relatively well.” The pub had been in business for about a year when the Robson ferry sailed for the last time. Although the boat docked a stone’s throw from the pub’s front door, Pellerine says its demise was more:of a personal pain than a financial one. “From a business point of view, I don’t think it affected us that much,” he said. Veronica said that the people who would take the ferry to come for lunch would wait until later and make an evening out of it. - “In a way it hurt business, and in a way it didn’t,” she said. “What we lost in the lunch crowd we gained in the nighttime crowd.” A man who would give anyone the time of. day, Pellerine said running the pub allows him to wear two hats at once. “I enjoy being around people,” he said. “I felt I could be with people and still run a business.” Named because of its location at the base of Lion’s Head Rock, the Pellerines are especially proud of how much of a say they had in building their pub. “Veronica. and I = are responsible for what you see,” Pellerine said. “Here was nothing and we created it.” With a clientele that ranges in-age from the college student to the senior, Pellerine says the pub is one place where you can agree to disagree and not walk away angry. “This is a very friendly place,” he said. : “Everyone knows one another.” And the friendliness extends to the point of watching out for the person who's thinking about driving home. “If they feel someone should not be driving they'll offer them a ride home,” Pellerine said. “We try to be as responsible as we can.” Two weeks ago the pub was involved with Selkirk College’s Alcohol Awareness Week, a program Pellerine feels. is invaluable. “I think a lot more people are aware of drinking and driving,” he said, adding that educating the public is all important. “I would like to see that further promoted.” : Since October, patrons of the Lion’s Head have had the choice of either traditional fare in the pub or fine dining next door at the Lion’s Head Dining Room, which Pellerine calls an early success. “It’s been really well received so far,” he said. Success aside, Pellerine says he and Veronica have been able to enjoy the pub’s first five years without it running their lives. “It hasn’t been the be all and end all in our lives,” he said. “We've been able to enjoy it.” happy man.
