SUPPORT PAYMENTS

Gov't must enforce laws

TORONTO (CP) — The provinces must adopt an
aggressive enforcement system if there is to be a dramatic
reduction in the number of ex-spouses who default on
maintenance payments, says a report prepared for Status of
Women Canada.

The growing incidence of divorce means there are
serious problems in the enforcement of maintenance orders,

the payments to initiate and pursue enforcement of the
order at her own expense and with no guarantee of success.

If the defaulting spouse leaves the province where the
order was made, enforcement becomes even more difficult.

The provinces have set up a system of reciprocal
enforcement of maintenance orders but it requires “a
lengthy, cumbersome process to achieve this end,” the
