Showtime is 8 p.m. Tremblay, who swept the honors at the 16th annual Granby Song Festival in Granby, Que., burst on to the Canadian music scene amid a flurry of excitement and acclaim, a news release from Oasis Productions says. Her vocal presence, her unique whistling style and her disarming charm have already conquered the hearts of audiences throughout the United States and Eastern Canada, according to the release. Her debut album, Lucie Blue Tremblay, was released on Olivia Records in 1986. Though new artists afe constantly being presented, only a few command the broad attention for some special quality that sets them apart and in Tremblay’s case there is more than one. Singing in both French and English; her performance is_‘com: pletely bilingual. She also brings a special presence to the stage — when she speaks, her open casy manner establishes an instant rapport with her audience, the release says. Her voice is one of unsurpassed ity with a warmth that disarms tix most jaded listener, according to O% Produc- tions. And a further startling talent emerges in some of Tremblay’s songs — as the audience looks to the stage, they see Tremblay’s mouth move but hear a whistle that seems to come from another dimension. It is a sound, an instrument, to make even the finest pan flutist envious, the production company says. Reading the Signs is a show that examines the present state of literacy in Canada. It will speak first to poten- tial learners, to encourage them to participate in literacy programs in or- der to improve their skills and oppor- tunities, a college news release says. It also has a message to high school students about the importance of staying in school, and speaks to the daughter control her own future; a Native Indian who has decided to stay and work for the good of his com- munity; and a plant manager of a small business who is determined: to convince his boss to provide litetacy support for his employees. The performance has played in communities across Canada receiving rave reviews from critics and literacy workers alike, the college says. The talented cast performs against the backdrop of a musical montage to convey with humor and compassion the problems of the illiterate. More importantly, they offer suggestions how people can overcome their han- dicaps. It’s a play that sells hope, the college says. “We're not really concerned with giving answers, and we don’t want to impose values on people’s lives. What our show is about is possibilities,’’ said Joel Greenberg, who os Reading the Signs.
