John Van Putten 365-5579 WEDNESDAY, November 25, 1992 9A Rebels rebound and move up the ladder JOHN VAN PUTTEN Sun Sports a — Castlegar Rebels tallied up four more points in their weekend games against Spokane and Nelson. Friday night the boys in blue and white travelled up to Nelson and handed the Maple Leafs a 3-2 loss. The Rebels put the two points in their pockets and came home ready to focus on their next game against Spokane, Saturday night. Their American opponents were not much of a match for the pumped up Rebels. While the Braves were packing up for trip home, the Rebels were Savoring the taste of a 8- 4 victory. __ The victories have resulted in the Rebels mov- ing one step up the league dings ladder. the time, & poor forces the players to shake their heads and realize something is wrong. , ‘The Rebels have put the games against Columbia Valley and Golden behind them, realizing that if they don’t put 110 per cent into every game, they cannot hope to be a contender. Walker said he overheard some of the guys in the dressing room saying they thought the losses made them realize a few things, and that they really gained more from that weekend than they lost. Now that the players have focused themselves once again on the task at hand, which is playing one game at a time and giving each game their all, they've used their new found wisdom to rack up four more points. Friday night in Nelson Combining their win Saturday against Spokane, with Friday’s win in Nelson and Spokane’s loss at home on Sunday to Grand 'Forks, moves the Rebels up one rung in the lad- der, The Rebels are now sitting in third place with ‘We can't be letting up at all, It's a discipline thing we have to work on’ the penalties were a little one sided. Castlegar was handed 72 minutes while the Maple Leafs were only given 24 minutes of punish- ment time. Kevin Leiman put Castle- gar into the lead at 11:31 into the first period. It was the only goal of the period. — GORD WALKER Rebels Co-Coach 25 points, one ahead of Spokane. Grand Forks and Nelson still hold the number one and two spots with 32 and 29 points respectively. Rebels co-coaches had good things to say after the weekend victories. “Tt was the first time in six years we have won in Nelson,” Rebels co-coach Gord Walker said. With the psychological hurdle of not being able to win on Nelson's ice crossed, Castlegar is looking forward to the future games against Nelson: one at home on Thursday, and two more games in Nelson during the regular season. Coming off a less than desirable team perfor- mance on Nov. 13 and 14 against two of the weaker teams in the league, in which the Rebels lost 3-1 to The second act of the play had Nelson putting in the equalizer 12:45 into the period. DaCosta followed that up with Castlegar’s go-ahead-goal at 15:32. Nel- son evened things up with less than one minute left in the period. The Rebels Jesse Oldham finally got the go-ahead- goal, and as it turned out, the eventual winner at 17:25. It may not have been one of the prettiest games of the year, but the goaltending continues to be a strong part of the Rebels game. “Vaughn Wely played an game against Nelson. He faced 39 shots. He has played well for us all year,” Walker said. When you ine the goal- tending with a goal scoring frenzy as the Rebels did on night, things can only keep looking up. Castlegar received 52 penalty minute to Spokane's 60. hosts, beating their guests 8-4. When the first period ended, the Braves must have felt like they had footprints up their front sides and down their back Castlegar strutted off the ice with a 5-0 lead. - But Spokane started the second period with life back in them. They rallied back with four goals during the second but once again the Rebels put a couple more past the Spokane goalie Peter Mattson. The period ended with Castlegar leading 7-4 Walker cites a lack of forechecking for the four Spokane goals. SUN SPORTS PHOTO / John Van Putten, “We were not forechecking them during the se¢- ond period,” he said. ; ._ The only goal of the third was Mike Hunter's goal 50 seconds into the final frame—the icing on the vie- tory cake : One major problem the Rebels have yet to over- come is allowing the momentum to swing in their opponents favour. “We can’t be letting up at all, it’s a discipline thing we have to work on,” Walker said. The Rebels will be using some of the discipline the coaches have been working hard to enforce and using it in the upcoming games.
