Page 8A Widows —__... Continued from 7A husbands, were cancelled when they semarpied of entered into common-law relationships. Bill 63 restored the WCB pensions to the majority of wid- ows who had lost them upon remarriage. But about 50 of us have been denied the same right or benefit. This was done with- out any humane concern by the government and WCB by selecting an arbitrary date— totally without logic or justice. Because we have been treat- ed as irrelevant and obsolete by the Minister for Women's Equality, Penny Priddy, the Minister of Labour, Dan Miller and the Chair of the WCB, James Dorsey, we are now going public with our long, lonely and futile quest. We have advised the Premier that we are giving him one week to respond before we go public and tell our stories indi- vidually and as a group. On September 6, if Mike Harcourt does not release our letter, it will be available to all reporters, government officials and members of the public. Marlene Grigg, Burnaby, B.C. Why hide? Dear Editor: T am writing to express my about an i placed in your August 31 issue. The ad invited readers to voice support for a “single-family resi- dential home subdivision” in south Castlegar by attending tonight's public hearing at 7 p.m. the far end of 4th Avenue). The pérson or persons who placed the ad presumably want readers to give their unqualified te@ a project described only as to the city’s bylaws. Nowhere does the ad say who will pay for the millions of dol- lars which will be needed to upgrade the water, sewer, roads and storm drains for such a large development—the largest by far im the history of Castlegar! (It will be three times the size of the previous largest subdivision!). ‘This needs to be explained to all Castlegar taxpayers at tonight's Nowhere does the ad say that this huge subdivision will have, as its primary access for 1,000 cars a day, a narrow road an existing residential area. Second, the ad doesn’t identi- fy who is seeking this ‘support’. Is it the developers who stand to make a lot of moncy? The real- tor who will be marketing the lots and will alo-thake large amounts of money? Who? We don’t know. If the ad was a letter to the edi- tor (it was placed on the Letters t® the Editor page), it would mever have been printed. The Shun’s. letters policy is quite clear: “AN letters must be signed, with address and telephone number...” just as this letter is signed. The Sun will occasionally withhold names from publication, but only for a “valid reason”. The reason for this policy is clears: people shouldn't be allowed to hide behind anony- mous letters. They should be willing to stand up and be identi- fied for what they believe. If they aren't willing, then the letter real- ly isn’t worth the paper it's writ- ten on and it should go where it belongs— in the garbage. Why wasn't this person (or persons) who placed this ad will- ing to identify themselves. What are they afraid of? It makes me wonder—not just about the ad, but about the subdivision itself.
