CASTLEGAR NEWS, Thursday, December 14, 1972 of Saturday’ S Election “Winners Mike Livingstone Elected Castlegar Aldennan George Rilkoff Board, Areea J Carl Henne ‘Hected Elleen Hughes Elected — School Board, Casti Re-Elected — School John Pinckney Elected Kinnaird Alderman Gerry Rust Re-Elected Kinnaird Alderman Prince George Trustees Give Approval fo Major Changes Prince George school trustees have given approval for a major change in the staffing Paticin of several of its secondary schools. Main features of the change are an increase in the ratio of students to teachers, elimination of the posi- tion of department head, and the establishment of positions of “‘spe- cial responsibility’’. The positions of special responsi- bility are much broader than the nt head role, says Dine Superintendent Dave Todd. Under the new staffing pat- tern, one person will correlate all humanities courses, another will for the Castlegar Alderman courses, and a third would be ahead of student services —a kind of high school dean of students. At two of the schools vice- pincipals will be eliminated, and a business manager will handle much of the non-cducational administra- tive work which in the past has been handled by the principal or vice- principal. “We had been thinking along these lines for several years now,"" id Todd, but it wasn't until the operating budget tightened up this year that action was taken. By eliminating the department heads ‘who received allowances of about $1,000 each above their regular teachers salaries and increasing the Lies -teacher ratio for purely finan- ial reasons, we've saved this dis- tet about $160,000 for the coming . school year, whe said. The result, Todd says, will be a clearer delineation of role and responsibility, and will also make sure that highly-paid and highly qualified educators aren't burdened with tasks which could as easily be performed by a non-educator in the schoo! office, ‘The new business managers inthe schools will have salaries ranging from $500 to $600 a month, with responsibility for shipping, receiv- ing, inventory, office routine, and other duties, assigned by the princi- In the past, he said, we've taken an experienced teacher from the classroom, raised his salary from $16,000 to $17,000, and had him doing a clerk's job.
