Tourism Release Anyone who has travelled to Nelson, the Queen City of the Interior of British Columbia, will be familiar with the term “Silver King,” the silver mine from which the city was found- ed in 1887. The mine closed after the smelter burned down in 1912, but the city remained, perched in a beautiful mountain setting on the southwestern shore of Kootenay Lake. It wasn't until 1957 that/ local residents decided to take advantage of their heavy an- nual snowfall ‘and steep terrain toattract winter tourists to the area. Silver King was chosen as the name for a small ski resort at the southern edge of the cjty. Skier enthusiasm. even- facilities being replaced by a new area, Whitewater, which was just a few miles from the city limits, right in the heart of the snow belt.
