os News _sune9, 1985 a eae Pulpit & Pew What do the Holy Scrip- tures have to say about the d gay practicing homosexuals? The possibility of finding any- ? One of the first instances in the Bible which mentions homo- sexuality is in Genesis chs 18 and 19. God called the cities of Sodom and Gomorah wicked and their sin grievous. What was their sin? We read that the men of the city of Sodom surrounded the home of a man named Lot, who had two visitors staying overnight. They gathered about his home, shouting “Where are the men? Bring them out, so we can rape them!” God blinded the men sur- rounding the home. The next morning the two visitors, who were angels, got Lot gnd his wife and two daughters out of the city and God sent fire from heaven and com- pletely destroyed the cities. Homosexuality is recog- nized in the Holy Scriptures, not as a lifestyle, but as a death-style. In Jude 7 we read: “Just as Sodom and Gomorah and the surrounding cities, which likewise acted immorally and indulged in unnatural lust, serve as an example, by un dergoing a punishment of et ernal fire.” (RSV) There are at least 15 ref. erences in the Bible to the destruction of the cities of Sodom and Gomorah. It appears that God wanted to strongly emphasize that the destruction came because of sin. In fact, we have adopted the name of Sodum into our language, as being synon- ymous with perverted sexual practices. What would the Bible say about a church composed of Our Action Ad Phone Number is 365-2212 thing 'y about it in the Bible is nil. In Romans 1:26, 27 (RSV) we read: “For this reason God gave them up to dis- honorable passions. Their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural, and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with pa- ssion for one another, men commiting shameless acts with men...” For God to sanction a church of practicing homo- sexuals, would be like estab- lishing a church made up en: tirely of continuing mur- derers or liars or bank rob- bers. A church is made up of sinners saved from sin, by the of Jesus eo y em » n m4 ~ a “Graduates” of the Castlegar co-op GRADS . . playgroup wave their diplomas at the final picnic. Christ as their Savior. Does the Bible place the stamp of approval on homo- sexuality? Here is an in- teresting text which will an. swer our question. “Do yeuknew that the un. righteous will not inherit God's kingdom? Be not mis- led, neither profligates, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor partakers in homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the avar- icious, nor drunkards, nor slanderers, nor robbers will inherit the kingdom of God.” (I Cor. 6:9 and 10 Modern Language Version) The Bible is clear when it defines wrong doing. There is no stamp of approval in the Scriptures on the practice of homosexuality. In fact, God condemns it. In summary, if one is to follow the Bible and accept its teachings as truth, then homosexuality has to be clas- sified in the category of sin and wrong-doing, and the Bible says: “The wages of sin is death,” but thank God for He has provided the way out, through Jesus Christ our Lord. He said he ac- cepted Jesus as his Savior in his early ‘teen years. Al- though he was involved in many organized religious ac- tivities as an adult, he said he had no understanding of spiritual things until only a few years ago. He also spoke about his and his wife's ministry not being immune to problems. He said that difficulties must be expected whenever a ser. ious commitment to serve the Lord is made. Mary Van Arsdale, a com- poser and gospel recording artist, ministered in singing. Through her songs, she en. couraged the ladies to give all of themselves, their prob- lems and their heartaches to Christ, and he would meet their every need. In closing, Sam Van Ars. dale again encouraged the ladies to place their trust in God in these difficult times.
