British Columbia woman has
been awarded $12,000 for the
trauma she suffered after
becoming ill from eating
tainted beef dip at a White
Spot restaurant three years
ago.

Inthe. first judgment of

Cohen said 47-year-old Cath-
erine Cyr is lucky to be alive
after suffering from botulism
for six weeks.

The award follows a Su-
preme Court decision in June
of last year in which Justice
Patricia Proudfoot found
White Spot responsible for
Cyr's poisoning.

Cyr, who was in the Van-
couver restaurant with her
family during a vacation, fell
ill two days after the meal.
She began seeing double,
slurring speech and was un-
steady on her feet.

White Spot faces lawsuits
from a further 37 people who
claim they suffered botulism
after dining at the restaurant
in the summer of 1985.

Doctors were unable to
diaghose Uyr'’s condition
even after extensive tests.
However, Cyr's husband be-

gan suspecting the restaur=

ant’s food was the cause
when he saw a television re-
port of a woman who had ap-
parently contracted botulism
after eating at the White
Spot.

White Spot has three
weeks to decide if it wishes to
appeal the award.

WINNIPEG (CP) — Four
years ago, Andy Tekauz
wrote a letter to a Winnipeg
newspaper complaining
about the selection of wines
available in Manitoba liquor
stores.

Drawing on knowledge
gained during two decades as
a wine lover, Texauz follow-
ed up with a detailed, seven-
page letter to Bill Emerson,
general manager of the Man-
itoba Liquor, Control Com-
mission_-which oversees
liquor sales in the province.

Emerson responded quick-
ly. He invited the Agri-
culture Canada research
scientist to bean adviser.

Tekauz, a bearded, be-
spectacled plant pathologist,
joined a panel of a dozen
experts who help the com-
mission sip and spit its way
through about 300 new wines
it considers adding to its
shelves each year.

Started in 1981 in an effort
to increase the public's say on
what the issi sells,

They concede their advice
may be no better than that
offered by the commission's
experts, but say they like the
idea of the public putting in
its two cents worth.

“It's working,” said Tek-
hauz, head of the Winnipeg
chapter of Amici dell’ Eno-
tria, an Italian wine society.
“We feel we are definitely in.
fluencing product purchasing
by our liquor commission and
that is what gives us the
most satisfaction.

“It’s not necessarily repre-
sentative of the man on the
street, but it is representa.
tive of a fair segment of the
wine-buying public.”

what should be purchased.

the panel, credits Tekauz’s
knowledge of small wine pro-
ducers in Italy with opening a
whole new area for the Mani.

“There's an objectivity and
a. credibility improvement,”
says Don Lussier, the com.
mission's assistant general
manager of purchasing and
distribution.

“We had become aware
that there was a perception
in the public's mind that pro-
ducts were being selected by
an internal, select group at
the liquor commission.”

The panel also includes the
likes of Jim Henderson, who
owns a Canadian Tire store in
Winnipeg, and Michael Cox,
manager of the exclusive
Manitoba Club.

Most members are affili
ated with wine societies —
Henderson is the former
president of the Opimian
Soeiety in Canada — while
some are representatives of
restaurants and clubs.

“I really feel we have the
best selection of Italian wine
in the country now as a result
of the work of the panel in
the past two years,” Bowness
said.

The tasting sessions also
provide tips which the ad
visers use when stocking
their own cellars or ordering
wines for their restaurants.

They meet about once a
month to swish, inhale and
taste about 30 new wines. At
a recent tasting, nine panel
members sat down at tables
laden with hundreds of
empty wine glasses and
pieces of bread and cheese to
“blind taste” 28 selections
from California and Wash-
ington state.

In one group of wines, a
Cabernet from California
placed second, but, at a price
of $9.30, was recommended
over the panel's first choice
— another California Cab-
ernet that would retail in
Manitoba for $20.05.
