This sport takes aim

Shooting at a stationary target is one thing, but when your targets are moving across
the sky it’s a whole new challenge

One that the Silver City Trap and Skeet Club works on every Sunday.

Members of the club say that once people start they find it addictive. The challenge is
always there to try and better your score on the next round. Most people come out just
for fun, it depends on how serious they want to get with the sport.

“You always want to get that one extra on your next time," said Shirley Lee, a mem-
ber of the club. “It is also a good stress relief, after a tough week you come out here and
when you leave, you usually feel better."

The Silver City Trap and Skeet Club is open to the public for both trap and skeet
shooting. New people are always welcome.

In trap and in skeet, clay ducks are flung across the sky while a shooter takes aim.
The targets must be hit before they fall to the ground, or fly out of the range of the shell.

In Trap shooting (the easier of the two) the targets move away from the shooter either
slightly to the left, right or straight ahead, shooters change positions after each five
attempts.

The difference in shooting skeet is they travel across either from the left or the right,
in front of the shooter. The person also moves from one station to another every three
shots. Each round is made up of 25 shots. The object, to hit as many as possible.

Any time guns are involved, safety is always the number one concern, and at Silver
City, safety tops everything else. No one is permitted to have a loaded gun unless it is
their turn to shoot

If you are interested in trying out this sport, the club is located halfway between
Castlegar and Trail on the east side of Highway 22. Shooting starts every Sunday at
noon. To shoot a round, the cost is $2.50 plus $4 for the shells. If you don't have your
own shotgun, don't worry, you can usually borrow one. Included in the price is some
coaching and a few helpful tips to get you started.
