The event was sanctioned as only a “B” class meet but that {| did not put a damper on the fun nor the competition. The River Otters must have benefited from a little home cook- ing because they ended up a very impressive second behind the Castlegar Aquanauts. The Otters are one of the smaller clubs in the region, but they showed up bigtime at their home pool by plac- ing ahead of teams from Trail, Colville, Nelson and Grand Forks. Some of the Aquanauts standouts were Darci Miller in Div.6 Castle Mountain Homes Girls and Clayton Bonin who set a record in the 80 yard breast- stroke in Div.4 Boys. Breanne Comin placed second in Div. 1 girls in only her second meet of the year and the “three Steve's” in Div.1 (Angrignon, Hall and Manarin) all had impressive perfor- | mances. Jones was also thoroughly impressed with the perfor- | mance of Matt Fox. “Here's a Div.3 guy who, at the beginning of the season, couldn't swim a freestyle length without catching the edge ofthe THANK pool,” said Jones. “He started to improve a little bit and only went | to one meet in Grand Forks. The regionals are the first big step for those swimmers who are serious about their swimmers. The top three finish- ers in each division go on to the Provincials being held in Kamloops August 19-21. “We're getting to that point in the season where everything is coming together,” said Jones. “That's the plan.” Jones expects a good group of Castlegar swimmers to qualify for Provincials not including those competing with the Kootenay Water Polo team which will also be participating. “The idea is for them to swim fast at Regionals and then faster at Provincials. We are looking for best times at Regionals and for 20 to 25 swimmers to qualify for Provincials. That is down slightly from last year, but that’s not unexpected because we lost a lot of swimmers from last year.” w The swimmers who fail to make the P have the i to finish off their season in Greenwood on August 13 for a fun “B' meet. Even still, the members of the aquanauts and River Otters wouldn't mind not sending a big contingent to the Greenwood meet if it would mean more swimmers in the Provincials.
