Rossland is gradually building up an enviable trade with the Boun- dary country and is sending through car load lots of hardware and other merchandise from the wholesalers here. Beer by the carload from Rossland is also finding a splendid market in the Boundary country. In fact, so brisk has been trade with the new district that business men feel more encouraged, although they have been hampered to some extent by slow service. “If Rossland merchants are to receive their share.of the Kootenay wholesal it it is lutely necessary for the railways to give prompter and better service on all out-going shipments.” That was the emphatic declara- tion of a big general merchant when questioned this morning regarding the jobbing situation. He has paid much attention to. the commercial development of southern British Cc bia, and his | ledge of the wholesale industry is as accurate as any man’s in the province. “The distributing field for which Rossland can be made the center extends to the western limits of the Columbia & Western railway, and to the east, as far as Ymir on ‘the Nelson & Fort Sheppard railway,” he continued. “The wholesale houses of Greenwood and Grand Forks, having ample capital and large consumption, will buy direct in carload:lots as soon as the Co- lumbia & Western extension is taken out of the construction de- dl partment’s hands. The jobbers of this city, however, have Trail and Robson as natural outlets, while they are on equal footing with Nel- son for the business of the Burnt Basin, Gladstone and Cascade. “Since there is naturally compe- tition in that field it is necessary for the Rossland dealers to overlook, no point in securing the trade.
