The award is ‘given for artistic presentation of docu- mentation of the events of lo- cal lodges. The Sons of Norway is a fra- ternal organization _ which works to preserve Norwegian traditions and culture, and sponsors local participation in the Ski for Light Campaign. They are also well known for their work with blind skiers. Mr. and Mrs. Ole Gunder- sen, both born in Canada, are both popular and active mem- bers of long standing in the lo- cal Sons of Norway Lodge. In her compilations, San- dra Gundersen makes good use of traditional Norwegian floral decoration based on rosemaling, the painting of flo- ral designs on wood, and typi- cal embroidery designs as well as the liberal use of pho- tographs and clippings. Sandra Gundersen has been involved in her collec- tions since the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II and has many private books of Castle- gar history as well. Although she has been com- peting since her appointment as historian, this is the first time she has captured first prize in a competition that in- volves more than 20 clubs in British Columbia alone. It was Gundersen’s 16th volume that won her this re- cent award. The Sons of Norway at one time owned their own building on Columbia Avenue but, more recently, meet monthly at the Senior Citizens Hall in Castlegar.
