As medical health offi- cer in Nanaimo and Prince Rupert, he spent long hours travelling by boat and plane to remote Indian communities. The success of the federal program was evidenced by the closing of three 200-bed hospi- tals in 1955—"you might say we worked ourselves out of a job,” Dr. Schmitt said in an inter- view. However, he added that a - great deal of pioneering work was done during this period, notably in. immunization and health education programs among the native people. ’- As-the federal program would down, Dr. Schmitt ac- cepted an invitation to join the provincial health department in B.C. He came to Trail in 1964 as director for the WKHU, and immediately became involved in the various health problems associated with the base metal industry. He has written some 20 “ papers in the general area of environmental research, and is recognized as an authority in this field. Dr. Schmitt is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, a recognition of his service to public health and preventive medicine, and a Fellow of the American Colleges of Chest Diseases.
