WINNIPEG (CP) — devil Ken Carter has oe _ dreaming for years of a spec- * tacular jump, using a rocket- , Powered automobile to leap a “section of the St. Lawrence River. The dream, which started as a plan to jump over Lake Champlain, ‘hasn't come true. But it’s been captured on film + by Robert Fortier, director of a feature-length National Film Board documentary, The Devil at Your Heels. Fortier, here for the film's . premiere,-has been following “Carter for several years, through the project's plan- ning, financing, aborted at- tempts and refinancing “The. only person who thinks the stunt will work is Ken Carter,” said Fortier, who at first didn't think the daredevil's project . would take so long to realize. “One: of the biggest rea- sons for my involvement was my belief it would be a one-shot attempt,” Fortier said in an interview. “When things didn’t, work out the first year, I doubted there _ would be a chance to revive the project. “But the next year, Ken called me up and said it was . on again. Eventually, I would be going back to get a little more footage for the next five years.” Fertier first became in- volved when he did a short on Carter. several’ years ago. “and coincidentally it was at that time that Evel Knievel . was doing his Snake River jump. Ken kept on wonder- ing ‘how he. could outdo Knievel and I suggested he do a jump across a football field, © “A few week’ later, Ken phoned me and said he was going to jump across Lake Champlain and would I be interested in filming the event. I leaped at the oppor- tunity.” But Carter's plans were changed when residents of Lake Champlain insisted on big fees for the use of their’ land. His search for an alter- nate site led him to the banks of the St. Lawrence. After several legal battles, Carter now owns both the rocket car and the land that has been designated for the jump. But his grand scheme remains up in the air. “To be honest, I think the end has happened as far as jumping-the St. Lawrence is _ concerned,” said Fortier, who admires the fearless driver's tenacity. _ We Visit: 16-Day California Tour Departs: March 13th x OREGON + RENO *LAS VEGAS x DIS-° NEYLAND xSAN FRANCISCO %& TIJUANA *SAN: DIEGO *xOREGON COASTAL ROUTE * HEARST CASTLE Disneyland Spring Break “4 Day.
