By MIKE FUHRMANN The Canadian Presse Alexander Dewdney calls himself “a fairly typical member of faculty in a fairly typical Canadian univer- sity.” , But his novel, The Planiverse, is anything but typical, presenting an intricately imagined world in which every element — from its flora and fauna to its eivili- zation of intelligent beings — exists in just two dimen. sions. “It's sort of weird, isn’t it,” says the University of Choirs have sung at World Expositions, Western Ontari P' science pi ly describing a book that resists being classified as sciencé fiction or put into any other literary pigeon-hole. Intriguing in its oddity in the first few pages, the story of Yendred’s journey across his planet Arde and the detailed realization of the 2-D concept quickly becomes enthralling. HAS THEORY “] know this sort of thing is entirely unlikely to happen,” Dewdney said in an interview. “But I have this funny theory about reality that says if two things happen to coincide in certain respects they are the same, and there may be a kind of communication going on between them.” Or, to paraphrase an explanation in the book: “As a vibrating tuning fork can cause another tuning fork to start vibrati the program coincided with enough aspects of the independently existing Planiverse to set that world “vibrating” and establish a communications link between Earth and Arde. Obscure explanations and theories of reality come freely from Dewdney, but perhaps that's not surprising considering that his mind operates in the most arcane regions of theoretical computer science. “My research is really out in left field. It has great potential importance, but only one in 100 chances of Basically, Dewdney studies the limits on what can or cannot be done by a computer, which he calls “the deepest mystery in theoretical computer science now. “There are some problems that seem to be computationally intractable. In other words, having a computer doesn't help you.” GAINING FAME Dewdney, who has published several learned articles in his field, is now finding his audience multiplying rapidly with publication of The Planiverse, his first novel. And he’s made another stride toward fame by taking over as author of the much-read Computer Recreations column in Scientific American magazine. “I don't allow myself to think about the implications of writing for nearly a million fairly knowledgeable people.” Dewdney said he was afraid his 2-D fantasy would sacrifice his credibility as a serious computer scientist, adding: “I've been worried about being regarded as a nut.” Research and teaching are his two loves, he said. Then why write The Planiverse? “Frankly, I got kind of seduced by the money,” Dewdney said. Last year, the average sales price of a North Amer- ican car in Canada was 15.1 per cent higher than the av- erage price of a Japanese car, figures from Statistics Can- ada show. Early 1984 stat- isties indicate consumers are now paying only 8.25 per cent lid on prices. They say a sim- ilarly equipped car is priced only two to three per cent higher than it was a year earlier. At the same time, Jap- anese car dealers are order- ing bigger and better-equip- ped vehicles from the fac- tories and finding the market able to absorb the higher prices. The event, one of three planned Lunches With Leaders, is the brainchild of two Toronto women, Myra Davidson and Lynn Kinney. The idea was to give women a forum to learn where each major political party stands on women's issues. Davidson, president of a gourmet condiment company, and Kinney, head of a special event firm, began planning the series of lunches last January. Neither woman claims any political affiliation but, like, many Canadian women concerned with women's issues, they're trying to decide how they'll vote in the next federal election. “It is critical now that we have access to the leaders and their commitments to the problems facing women,” Davidson said in an interview Tuesday. “The only way we are going to get that access is if we're counted as a force.” GIVES GUIDELINES Judith Finlayson, head of the content committee for Lunches with Leaders, said Mulroney has been asked to focus his address on economic issues — including day care, equal pay for work of equal value and pensions for Wishing Success to the Union of Youth 37th Annual Festival CENTRAL FOODS (Community Owned & Operated) (Kindly donated 100 Ibs. of Watermelon.) Referring to the life span, he said: “It has remained constant for so long and under such a wide variety of conditions, I'd say it has been pretty well tested.” The purpose of longevity research was not to find a miracle potion that would enable people to live forever, but rather to find ways of allowing them to live longer while ining healthier, Masoro A RESULTS HOPEFUL Results of the “undernutrition without malnutrition” experiments on rats had been promising, he continued. “Their immune systems do not deteriorate as quickly and the onset of age-related maladies such as kidney failure, heart disease and cancer is delayed significantly,” Masoro said. Exactly how undernutrition achieves all this is unclear. “Our problem is that nobody knows what the aging process is,” Masoro said. “We only use these diseases as markers of the aging-process.” KNOCK THEORIES So far, Masoro’s team of eight researchers has only been able to disprove old theories about the connection between nutrition and One theory held that a reduced food intake slowed the rate of bodily growth, thereby stretching out the normal life processes. Another postulated that a reduction in body fat would increase longevity, while a third argued that less food would slow the metabolic rate at which the body burns itself out. “It took us more than eight years to show none of these were correct,” Masore said. “Now we are looking for the needle in the haystack.” In recent months he has directed his efforts to-finding a metabolic link between nutrition and aging, which he td
