Against this past fumble we have a present success and a future potential, both linked. This present is the story of Zuckerberg Island Heritage Park. A run-down and forgotten wilderness up to 1981 it was bought by the city as a potential park, but there was little will and less money available to develop it. For the next two years the city’s ‘Private Property, No “Trespassing’ signs left the island and its buildings open to fire and increased vandal depredations. Only alert citizens and prompt action by thé city firemen saved it from total destruction. > In the spring of 1983 the Castlegar Rotary Club, in cooperation with the city and certain began John Charters |. : '” Reflections y ¥ & recollections the fact that I am on the island every day, I was surprised at what I found. The average daily number of visitors for the period was 43 (Castlegar at this time it was about 20 and it has increased to 66 per day in the past week), The origins of these visitors for the period is a revelation (see Nonetheless, a magnet must have two poles to hold these filings — or visitors. In our case that other pole is the CP Rail station — the nucleus of the City of Castlegar and one of our few remaining heritage sites here. It is something we hold in trust for our children and grandchildren. The idea of a combination of heritage and tourism has been fact of economical life for sometime in Britain and elsewhere. It is arriving as a blinding light in Canada, but it is time we get moving, drawing the two together for the betterment of both. For the past several years the Castlegar Heritage Advsiroy C P! ives of City council and CP Rail officials have in an atmosphere of growing For the past years the Castlegar Heritage Advisory the work of restoring the island. By the fall of that year the Castl Heri Advisory C had been Administration Program Selkirk College — Trail Campus Is now taking registrations tor the September 1987 class ilabl. The following options are OFFICE CLERK CLERK-TYPIST SECRETARIAL — BOOKKEEPING — LEGAL SECRETARY — WORD PROCESSING Pre-testing will take place Wednesday, August 26. For more information or registration please call Helen McLellan. Calki —— CASTLEGAR CAMPUS—. 845 Victoria, Troil, B.C. VIR 313 (a 368-6236 The Office ) ished and the island opened as a city park. By the spring of 1984 the access suspension bridge had been built (with at leastonereckless life saved). Also, a grant had been obtained from the B.C. Heritage Branch and work begun (mainly by volunteers) on the restoration of the buildings: Certain persons continued to mutter darkly of the overall value of the bridge and the financial viability of the island project, while studiously ignoring the extensive support both were getting from the greater community. Ce PI of City council and CP Rail officials have been negotiating in an atmosphere of growing respect and understanding, the transfer of the railway station against the time for its removal and the construction of a new building. We have just been given notice. We now have about two months to remove and save the building. The time of talking is ended. The time for cooperation action is now. We must get possession or lose everything that has been worked for. The concept of the Ministry of Tourism, Recreation and Culture, I feel is a rational and positive approach, and these two poles ther with the Kootenay Doukhobor museum, the NEC and the College all form a part of a greater whole for By 1985, after two years of agi i i signs were finally set up at the south entrance and the centre of the city, though several local maps have yet to discover the place, and there are no signs for these coming in from the ferry. By June 1987 the Chapel House was officially opened and has been kept open at considerable effort by volunteers (friends of the island). In short, only five years ago Zuckerberg Island was virtually unknown to most citizens and almost entirely unknown beyond the city boundaries. In the past year it has been visited bythe premier, the Minister of Tourism, the Commander in Chief of the Canadian Forces, numerous school groups, foreign groups and many others. It is the place to visit in Castlegar. On request, I did a survey of visitors to the Chapel House in the past two weeks, July 22 to Aug. 5. Despite the better of this area. For those who still see the world only through the bars of a dollar sign it has been demonstrated repeatedly and repeated most strongly at the recent Project Pride royal commission hearings on heritage that for every dollar spent on the Heritage community two dollars come back. But as in any business venture, the dollar must be put out first. Furthermore, once the building becomes ours and is removed from private to city property, we can apply for grants of up to $50,000 from the B.C. Heritage Trust which operates under the ministry. The Minto was lost through a lack of organization and initiative. Zuckerberg Island Heritage Park, the Chapel House and the suspension have become realities and valuable acquisitions to the city’s future through organization, several major acts of faith and a lot of hard work. When the CP Rail station was open for a few brief days last spring during Heritage week, it had almost 600 visitors — a most positive indication of interest in an essential part of our past and a strong vote of confidence in our future. For those who would block this bold step into from the pi of y day I would offer two matters for consideration: One, in the remote possibility that they were successful the albatross that they will have hung about their neck would make that of the Ancient Mariner look like a toy hydrogen balloon. Two,’1 and I suspect, many of the’ other volunteer workers, would be giving immediate and serious to activiti to a city without purpose or vision. The loss to the community would be irreplacable, but inevitable.
