Bank gives FTA high

OTTAWA (CP) The free-trade
deal with the United States has spurred
Canadian business to. expand and
reorganize over the first year of the
pact, the Royal Bank of Canada said
Thursday

Some jobs have been lost, but many
more have been created in the first full
year of closer economic ties with the
United States, the bank said in a wide-
ranging assessment of the trade pact

“The FTA has not led to any major
or dramage dislocations in the
Canadian economy in its first year of
implementation.”*

More than a year ago, on Jan. 1,
1989, Canada and the United States
launched a deal that will gradually
eliminate tariffs and reduce other trade
barriers between the countries by 1998.

“Early evidence indicates that many
Canadian firms have responded well to
the opportunities and challenges of
free trade,” said the report

points on the week. The Vancouver
Stock Exchange closed up 3.12 points
to 716.67, for a 5.65-point loss on the
