No matter how eager you are.to
gtow them, tomatoes should not
be set out until all danger of frost
is past. When you do, remember
that the plants respond to care and
cultivation.

* If you buy your plants select only
sturdy, stocky ones. Look’ for darks
green foliage. Don’t be tempted by
tall spindly seedlings that top the

‘~plants.in other flats. They are apt

«to grow all to foliage, when what

you want in these days of high fooa
bills is an aburdent crop of actual

deeper than they were growing in
flats or pots, as the case may be.
As shown in the accompanying
Garden-Graph, a plant can be set
as deep as the first shoot of leaves.
If'pot-grown, set the root ball deep,
as illustrated. The soil can be

filled in gradually as each plant
becomes established.

The lower leaf stems on a to-
mato plant always turn yellow and
drop off, Therefore, such leaves
can be removed at planting time, if
you so desire.

Tomato stakes should be planted
before the plants themselves are
set..out, If the stakes are driven
into the ground after the tomato
plants have been set here is always
danger of injuring the roots.

true tomato. It;is also called the
