Several candidates and a personal scandal stand in his way. Nielsen is gathering support from both the Socred caucus and his own family to overcome the obstacles in his bid to succeed Premier Bill Bennett who will step Wown after the July 28-30 convention in the mountain resort of Whistler, 90 kilometres north of Vancouver. Nielsen, 47, orginally from Moose Jaw, Sask., currently is in charge of the health and human resources ministries which have a combined budget of $4 billion — nearly half the provincial budget. “I think it's indicative that you can carry a load, because when you become premier you're really carrying the whole load,” he said in an interview. The new party leader is expected to become “instant premier” and must be “up to speed” to run the government, Nielsen said. THE CANDIDATES “It would be very ficult for a person to come off the street and perform — as it would be expected — immediately.” It is one reason he wants to change the laws to allow only people elected to the legislature to become premier or a cabinet minister. Seen as arrogant and distant by critics, Nielsen is portrayed by friends as a Bogart-type character — a gruff and tough exterior concealing a warm heart. It is a theme echoed by his supporters. “He can be tough if he has to be, but he is always fair,” said Industry Minister Bob McClelland. “Jim Nielsen has illustrated that he has the compassion necessary to deal with “people problems” and is always willing to listen to others,” said Socred backbencher John Parks. Nielsen even cited a testimonial from an adversary, Dr. Gerry Karr, president of the B.C. Medical Association. In a letter, Karr said he found Nielsen to be forthright, fair and tough: “You have been a man of few words, but a man who kept his word. You certainly have the courage to do what you felt must be done despite certain knowledge that you would be criticized . . . ” First elected to the legislature in 1975, Nielsen has been in cabinet ever since and has considerable clout within the government and the party. He was instrumental in persuading Al Passarell, the member for Atlin, to desert the New Democratic Party and join the Socreds. Passarell, backing Nielsen's campaign, said he admires him as “a leader who is an individual and not a clone.” A former radio broadcaster, Nielsen is married with nine children — three of them adopted. His main hurdle in the race is the public embarrassment from being punched by the angry estranged husband of a woman he was visiting earlier this year. The beating left him with a black eye and facial wounds, and a damaged personal image that even he acknowledged could be an issue in his leadership bid. “I cannot change the past and I do not regret having been candid with the matter,” Nielsen said in the presence of his wife, Jean, when he announced his candidacy Parks, who knows the Nielsen family, said the incident “certainly played on my mind.” MOROSO, MARKIN & BLAIN CERTIFIED GENERAL ACCOUNTANTS 241 Columbia Ave. Castl THE HAIR ANNEX Chimneys Ph. 365-7287 Brian L.
