NANAIMO (CP) — British Columbia, women ean. drink, smoke, vote and may;, law be get away with some cuss- ing. But the law says a man can’t get his hair cut by hair- dressers unless they are also qualified as barbers. Fantastic Sam's hair cut- ting salon, a franchise oper. ation based in the United © States, found that out the hard way this month when Len Carmichael, secretary treasurer of the B.C. Barbers Association, told employees it’s illegal for hairdressers to cut a man’s hair. “He asked to speak to the hairdressers and told them that what they were doing was illegal and asked them to decline from doing men's hair,” said Doris Kennedy, owner-manager of the shop. Since then, Fantastic Sam's has hired a licensed barber to cut men's hair. With the barber on the premises, it's also permis. sible for hairdressers to cut men's hair because they are workjng under the barber's supervision, says Sal Sipione, of Vancouver, president of the barbers association. Don Eamer, secretary- treasurer of the Hairdressers only with women, Of the low- price, high-volume salons, many have barbers and hair- dressers and they are shifted about. The bathroom designed by Bronson Binger features heavy metal grilles, to close it off during the winter months. Instead of electric lights, it has gratings to let in sunlight. The few fixtures are made of stainless steel. And when it has to be clean- ed, all it takes is a once- over with a high-pressure hose. “There is nothing in it to be vandalized,” Binger said in an interview. But, he noted, “we won't find out how it works until it’s been in use for a while.” Binger said holders for toilet paper, and the paper itself, would not be installed because they easily are van- dalized. “Maybe community groups could provide toilet paper,” he suggested. The president of the city Art Commission, Edward Ames, said of the restroom’s design: “They don't have the elegance of 19th-century de- sign, but this isn't the 19th century... “Though they're greatly simplified, it is an example of a 20th-century solution.” The commission approved Binger's design last July 11. IN BUSY AREAS Binger, an architect and an assistant commissioner in the Parks Departent, said the restrooms would be built in busy areas. The first one is being erected at a park in Brooklyn. The building is shaped like an el dS, with a bath- room for men on one side, one for women on the other. Each has a stainless steel toilet bowl and a stainless steel wash basin. The men’s bathroom also has a stainless steel urinal. The toilet and urinal are blocked from view by a brick wall. . Building smog unhealthy A smog that builds up in many modern “sealed” office buildings can contribute to “building “illness” character- ized by eye irritation, sleep- iness and decreased concen- tration, a study indicates. The smog is produced. by gases and fumes given off by MOROSO, MARKIN & BLAIN Certified General A 241 Columbia Ave. Castlegar Ph. 365-7287 Soligo, Koide & John Chartered Accountants 615 Columbia Ave. (Upstairs) Castlegar Phone 365-7745 Henry John, B.Sc., C.A. Resident Partner KOOTENAY'S BEST building ig and photocopying machines, reports the study published in the Canadian Journal of Public Helath. The smog is intensified by ultraviolet radiation given off by all types of lighting, but particularly by full-spectrum or “sunshine simulating” fluorescent fixtures. Based on studies of work- ers in a downtown Vancouver office building, researchers found the smog and cases of building illness were reduced by drawing all air from the outside rather than recircul- ating building air and by changing full-spectrum fluor- escent lights to “cool white” units. In a related study, the re- searchers found that in an of- fice building where windows could be opened, there were far fewer worker complaints about environmental condi- tions and less illness and ab- senteeism.
