Jobs could be lost
by arms agreement

GENEVA (Reuter ) —
Millions of defence industry
workers would be affected if
major disarmament agree-
ments were concluded be-
tween the superpowers, the
International Labor Organiz-
ation said today.

It said about 53 million
people throughout the world
were employed in military
production and defence serv
ices, including about 14 mil-
lion in the industrialized
non-Communist countries of
the Organization for Eco-

nomic Co-operation and De.
velopment.

A one-third ¢ut in military
expenditure could affect
about four million workers in
OECD countries alone, the
organization said.

Researchers trying to
work out how to transfer
defence industry workers
into civilian employment
needed detailed information
on jobs and skills in arms
production, but many gov-
ernments were reluctant to
provide it for security rea-

sons, the organization added.

It said a questionnaire sent
two years ago to all its 150
member states asking for de-
tails of employment in de-
fence industries and research
and development received a
patchy response.

Several western countries
gave detailed answers, but
others including the Soviet
Union and its East European
allies and many Asian, Afri-
can and Latin American
countries did not reply, the
ILO said.

CALGARY — Still smarting from
a 44 tie Friday night with Czechos-
lovakia, Team Canada went through a
leisurely 35-minute skate Saturday
morning that was designed mostly to
buoy their spirits.

Sensing his club needed a con-
fidence boost, head coach Mike Keenan
restricted the practice mainly to minor
defensive drills.

“What we need to do is remain
positive,” said defenceman Paul Coffey,
whose third-period power-play goal
gave Canada a 43 lead before they
submitted to the tie.

“It wasn't that bad a game. We
were nervous at the start, a little
jumpy. There is pressure on us, playing
at home but there's no sense panicking.
We have to stay positive.”

The game revealed what Canada
knew ahead of time: They would be
strong offensively and in goal, but
would be weak defensively.

Assistant coach John Muckler said
that weakness comes largely from a
lack of communication on the ice.

VANCOUVER (CP) — Nobody's saying he’s the answer
to B.C. Lions’ receiver problems, but the Canadian Football
League club feels getting Jan Capinef back et the lineup
today is a step in the right dire¢tion.

The Canadian slotback has beén sidelined since ‘July 2 25
with a partially torn groin muscle as the Lions dropped three
of four games without him. Carinci is back in action this
afternoon as B.C. faces the Eastern Division-leading
Winnipeg Blue Bombers at B.C. Place Stadium.

Carinci will replace import Kevin Villars opposite John
Pankratz. That will pave the way for running back Anthony
Parker, who has missed the last two games with a twisted
knee, to. pair with Ray Crouse in an all-import backfield.

The Lions, who have scored only 13 offensive touch-
downs in eight games — the fewest in the CFL — will also
insert rookie wide receiver Jon Horton in the lineup to
replace the released Ned Armour.

“We've been trying hard to establish our passing game
on the other side of field from Jim Sandusky,” says head
coach Don Matthews.

“We feel getting Jan back will be a plus. He does a lot of
things that help the wide receivers get open.

“His knowledge of the defensive coverages enables him
to adjust routes in a way that helps the wide receivers get
open. And he's very good at blocking after the ball is
caught.”

‘A durable player during most of his seven CFL seasons,
the 28-year-old Carinei has found this past month one of the
most difficult of his career. While he has been sidelined, the

Lions’ offence has continued to struggle when in scoring

“It's tough to go to practice and games and not be able
to contribute,” says the Aginscoure, Ont., product. “There's
no easy answer to why we've had trouble scoring TDs, but I
think you'll see us be more aggressive — rather than just
taking what the defence gives us — when we get in scoring
range.”

While Carinci hopes to help the Lions’ passing game,
Crouse and Parker will try to extend B.C.'s. record of four
consecutive 100-yard rushing games against Winnipeg. But
one of the two backs, who are more experienced runners
than blockers, will have to pick up the blocking load —
particularly against the blitzing Bomber linebackers.

“We've got to take care of their blitz and go from there,”
said Crouse. “If we do that I think we can dominate them.”

The Lions still own the league's stingiest defence, but
are coming off a 31-26 loss to the Calgary Stampeders last
week in which Tim Petros, the Stampeders’ seldom-used
Canadian fullback, rambled for 140 yards.

Winnipeg running back Willard Reaves, who is on a
record-setting pace this year with 961 yards already and a
six-yard average, should be rubbing his hands with glee. But
Reaves isn't counting on an easy game.

“Just because a few teams have run well against them,
it doesn’t mean their defence is falling apart,” said Reaves,
who leads the CFL rushing derby by 519 yards over his
nearest rival.

“I don't think there's anything wrong with B.C.’s
defence. I think they just have to get themselves together.”

“That has a tendency to happen
against European teams,” Fuhr said

pass a lot more than we do and where
we'll dump the pork in and chase it,
they won't do that.

“They want to make everything a
pretty play and when they do, they do
it well.”

Hamilton and many of the players were

“We have to be (better),” said
Fuhr.

Coffey said it is simply a matter of
time, as it always is when Canada
throws together a team of pros for
international tournaments.

Time, however, is limited.

“The five guys on the ice have to
play together,” said Coffey. “For team
defence, we need time. But we knew
that before we started.”

To use it as an excuse, he said,
would be a cop-out.

As was pointed out, however,
Canada didn't exactly sparkle in the
round-robin portion of the 1984 Canada
Cup tournament either. They finished
2-2-1 for five points and fourth place.
Their two wins came against France
and Czechoslovakia, two teams who
failed to win a game in 1984.

But the 1984 team found its co
hesiveness in time to upset the Soviet

Union 32 in a semifinal game in
Calgary that is being called one of the
best ever played.

Canada then beat Sweden two
straight in the best-of-three final.

This year’s round-robin play con-
tinues through Sept. 6 to eliminate one
of the five teams.

Friday's opening two games — the
United States beat Finland 4-1 in
Hartford, Conn. — drew a total of
fewer than 17,000 fans, but tournament
organizer Alan Eagleson said that by
the time it ends there should be a profit
of about $1.5 million.

The tournament has been plagued
by poor ticket sales blamed largely on
the prices that range up to $29.

Several games had to be moved
including one on Monday between the
Soviet Union and Czechoslovakia. That
was scheduled for Calgary but was
moved to Regina.

The Sweden-Czechoslovakia game
on Wednesday was originally set for
Hamilton but was also moved to Regina
where seating capacity is 5,796.

McGwire’s home run

10th inning to give the Oakland
Athletics a 6-5 win Saturday over Tor-

Fernandez grounded a two-strike, two-
out single to left, scoring Kelly Gruber,
who had walked off winner Eric Plunk,
2-4, moved to second on a sacrifice and
third on a groundout.

McGwire homered off Mark Eich-
horn, 10-6, on the first pitch of the 10th.
Dennis Eckersley pitched the bottom
half of the inning for Oakland, earning
his 11th save.

In the Oakland first, Luis Polonia
singled and Jose Canseco walked.

Niekro’s first pitch for a homer, his
17th and the fourth consecutive game
he has homered. McGwire also had an
RBI triple in the inning and scored on
Mickey Tettleton's single.

And we know that Leach was
found sometime the next day in
another hotel. But where was he in
between that time, and what was he
doing as his teammates scratched
their heads in confusion, his wife
worried and the Seattle police
scoured the city for him? I have a
few theories.

Granted it’s not your New York
or Los Angeles, but Seattle is a
pretty hip city and there are plenty
of places a confused major league
ballplayer could go.

Leach said last Thursday that he
flew the coop from his Warwick
Hotel room after having a marital
spat with his wife Angie who had
accompanied him on the trip.

Perhaps he went to the Seattle
Zoo to unwind ftom his marital
problems. Why the zoo? Maybe

actually having to go to the ballfield.
Have you ever seen a batter after

head by a wild pitch? He'd give a

Listening to some of the gibberish
there is enough to send anyone into

Perhaps he went to the Pike Place
Market to compare the vegetables
there to the ones that hang out in
the offices of some major league
clubs.

It's a mystery alright. Leach isn't
talking about where he went or
what he did, and neither is his wife
or the Blue Jays management.

Oh well, at least he and his wife
have kissed and made up and solved

Remember Duncan, Quesnel and

Duncan was eventually chosen as
the one that would get the huge
piece of lumber and last week it
arrived and just in time I say.

The Vancouver Canucks — the
National Hockey League team that
sends a shiver up Glen Sather's
spine — has held its hockey camp in
Duncan for the last few years and
this year it looks as if they'll do the
same.

If that squad is anything like it
has been in past years then t

The 1987 Provincial Swim Meet was held at the
Crystal Pool in Victoria, last weekend.
Three swimmers from the Robson River Otters
participated with outstanding results.
In Division II Kim Verigin had a winning swim,
clocking a personel best time in his strongest race, 100
free, placing second to bring home a silver medal.

The 50 free, also with a personel best time placed
fourth. The 50 fly placed fourth in consolations and 100
LM. 5th place in consolations.

In Division VI Jason Schuepfer, in his strongest
stroke, swam the 100 fly to come in seventh place, and the
200 I.M. placing first in consolations. Both races were
