The calm of Zuckerberg Island Heritage Park was shattered last week by the continuous snarl of chainsaws and the thud of hammers. Harry Stan, executive direc- tor of the Castlegar and District Development Board, had earlier made arrangements with the Castlegar Heritage Society, which administers the island for the city, for his crew to continue the work it had begun so well last year. This week, augmented by volunteers Doris Sweeney and Wayne Gamborski, they started on the job. Carpenter Stan Peacock de- signed, built and painted an at tractive fence to protect the kukuli at the head of the suspen- sion bridge. This model Indian winter pithouse — remains of which are scattered around the island — was build by an ar cheology class at Selkirk College under the direction of Dr. Mark Mealing. Hitherto unprotected, it has suffered some damage by chil dren climbing over it, thinking that it was a plaything. The fence meets \a long-established need. Elsewhere on the island, chainsaw operator Dave Wood ard has selectively thinned lodgepole pines and acacia around the circumfrance of the island. These trees have been choking out more fragile and exotic plants and inhibiting the view and access to the river. The thinning program has been carried out under the critical eye of island naturalist Doris Sweeney. Prior to and during the operation she tagged and helped cut out hundreds of excess trees while issuing dire warnings concerning the protec. tion of hundreds of others. At the same time, concerted efforts by foreman George Fon. tes and helper Alex Ferreira have eliminated four truckloads of crushed gravel and greatly enhanced and stabilized many of the island pathways. Gamborski, besides assisting the crew, is giving the 16 island viewing benches and picnic tables their anual coat of prot- ective stain. The smoke from burning slash fires rose over the island on Friday but there is still a consid. erable amount of work to be done. “It is a job which requires effort just to keep ahead of the efforts of Mother Nature,” said project supervisor and Heritage Society president John Char- ters. “It also calls for a lot of coop- eration, intelligent dedication and hands-on work to keep it looking natural. The Castlegar and District Development Board crew and volunteers have done all of that and Castlegar citizens can be proud of the result of their efforts.” Poison safety reviewa OTTAWA (CP) The federal nnounced review and demands for it became Assorted Varieties.
