Spokane seems to be follow- ing a trend that is catching on in larger centres across North America. The recycling-transfer sta- tion sites have little resem- blance to conventional dumps. No more mud roads, dingy lighting and smoldering piles of waste. Instead, the sites are paved and lighted and open seven days a week in several conve- nient locations. The basic funding for the sites is via municipal taxes. In addition to revenue from tax- es, residents dumping unsort- ed garbage are assessed a fee at the time of drop-off. Reduced rates are charged for compostable materials, in- cluding grass clippings, leaves, pine needles, weeds and small tree prunings. . A wide range of recyclable materials are accepted at the transfer stations free of Pe, uo Recycling and You charge. These materials include glass bottles and jars, corru- gated cardboard, brown paper bags, aluminum and steel cans, scrap metals, newspa- pers, magazines, and Code 1 and 2 plastics. Also, reusable ey clothing and household goods may be dropped. Each Spokane-area site al- so accepts a variety of house- hold hazardous waste items free of charge. Those items in- clude car batteries, pesticides, fertilizers, waste oil, paints, solvents, antifreeze and used household batteries. Materials are sorted at the site under supervised condi- tions.
