CASTLEGAR NEWS, Thursday, Dec. 5, 1968 : CASTLEGAR N EWS “Here tet the press the people's rights unawed by ii by gain” Family Life Agency Needed Here The suggestion of Rev. Terry Allen in last week's C: News for of a Family Life Agency in this area is not one that should go unheeded. Writing in the regular church column, Man Alive, the minister of St. David's An- glican Church called for such an agency to help save marriages that are in trouble, and to help keep others from going the same way. ‘Such a group,” he said, “could organ- “Divorce,” wrote Rev. Allen, “is the tip of the iceberg that shows above the surface of our troubled home waters, Below it lies |? the great mass of marriages that are quietly dying. Husbands and wives grow indifferent or hostile to one another, and their children reap the harvest of parental mismanage- ment, of punitiveness or neglect, of over- indulgence or over-coerclon, which condi- tions them to lead the same sort of sorry 2 lives ize-both p and for the whole community, working together Everybody talks about the breakdown of and the family group as one of the as a team to provide a coun- selling service and public education pro- grams which present the knowledge of ex- perts in all areas of family life.” He added: “It would seem that our area is large enough to justify such an agency, and cer- tainly the need is great enough.” . Rev. Allen quotes some sorry statistics to putress his point of view. He says recent surveys show that fewer than half of our married couples would rate their marriages as “very happy” and that some 40 per cent of our population is handicapped by various neurotic disorders, most of which can be traced to a poor family environment in the past. evils of modern society, but as with the weather, nobody seems to do anything about One notable exception is the Vanier In- stitute of the Family, which since its incep- tion in 1965 has had one purpose: a strength- ening of family living through a program of research and education. Perhaps Rev. Allen and his congrega- Outs tion will persue his idea further. And pos- sibly the Vanier Institute is an organization which can offer constructive help and sug- gestions in getting such a Family Life Ag- ency underway. Rust Has Earned Voters Support 7 We hope Kinnaird voters return Gerry Rust to office in Saturday's voting. .He has a wealth of experience and an appetite for hard work that are too often the exception, rather than the rule, for ser- vice on municipal councils and other public bodies. But Kinnaird voters have an even broader responsibility than usual in voting, because Mr. Rust is not only an alderman of that town but is the chairman of the Central Kootenay Regional District as well. If they should deny Mr. Rust re-election, then they deny his service to the residents of the en- tire region. As one of the first regional districts formed in this province, CKRD has had a Pioneering role to play. And as Municipal Affairs Minister Dan Campbell has said, re- gional districts “are writing their own mun- icipal act.” Thus there is no precedent for much of what they are doing and it is only through the guidance provided by such ex- i i as Mr. Rust that this increasingly important level of government is taking form. Electors of the Garden Municipality are in a most envious position in Saturday’s vot- | ing. Besides such experienced aldermen as Mr. Rust and Steve Jankola to choose from, they also have two younger candidates — Bob Lightle and Jack Chernoff — who are running lively campaigns and making this election the most interesting in years. And We Mitch Warford, a man who has proved his capacity for getting down to hard work in his position as vice-chairman of Regional Re- creation Commission No. 1, is also a cap- able candidate. With five men to choose from and two votes apiece to cast, we suggest Hionaied should ward- ing experience and ability by casting one of their votes Saturday for Mr. Rust. He has earned such support. — Bowling Series: ouat League Margi Munns 255. pir Kay evans 618, THS Muffets 952.
