82 CastlegarNews July 28, 1990 SPORTS Kicking Lu is closing in VANCOUVER (CP) — Lui isn't your garden variety Place-kicker. Besides kicking field goals and con- * verts, Passaglia punts, kicks off, has been known to run or pass on third down and has even caught a touch- down pass. Now the Vancouver native, in his 1Sth season with the B.C. Lions, is Poised to become the top scorer in CFL history. The five-foot-11, 180-pound, soc- cer-style kicker has pulled to within 16 points of retired Edmonton kicker Dave Cutler's 2,237 points. Passaglia has kicked 483 field goals, the most in CFL history; Cutler had 464. He has missed just one of 551 con- vert attempts. That was seven years ago when the holdere, Joe Paopao, couldn't handle a low snap. Passaglia also is the CFL leader in punting with more than 82,000 yards, averaging more than 43 yards a punt His production includes a 54-yard field goal in 1985 and a 97-yard punt three years ago. All but six of his points have come from kicking. Ironically, his first Points in the CFL were on a 10-yard touchdown pass during his rookie season. Passaglia, who has led the CFL in scoring three times, threw a touch- down pass to Scott Lecky last season. The play covered 89 yards. Passaglia first played quarterback and then wide receiver when he was at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, on an athletic scholarship. But it was because of his kicking that the Lions made him their first round pick in the 1976 CFL draft As the record gets closer — Passaglia has 25 points in two games * tions 825-4466 this season — his modesty increases. “Helping the B.C. Lions gain respectability in the city has been im- portant to me,”’ Passaglia said in a recent interview “We weren't getting big crowds when I joined the team. I'm thankful I could help bring a winning attitude and a wihning atmosphere to the team. It’s important to me to have a respectable, hard-working football team."" Ugly doesn't matter in standings for Riders OTTAWA (CP) — It wasn’t pretty, but it was what win-starved Ottawa Rough Rider fans wanted — a 50-46 upset of the Edmonton Eskimos. “At the beginning of the year, if someone asked me: “Would you take losing your first two games to beat Ed- I think I would,” said Rider wide receiver Stephen Jones, who caught touchdown passes of $7 and monton?’ 47 yards. The win was the first for Ottawa this CFL season af- “*Sheilagh, will you marry me? Love, Bill.’’ On the field, Ottawa quarterback Damon Allen com- pleted just 10 passes, but five of them went for touch- downs. Edmonton quarterback Tracy Ham threw for 411 yards and rushed for 62, but the Rider defence intercepted him four times and sacked him eight times. Ottawa led 23-0 after 12 minutes and 36-13 at half- CFL to come back ter two losses and the first loss for Edmonton after two wins. It was also the first time the Riders have beat the Eskimos in 10 games stretching back to July 18, 1985. The crowd of 26,411 was roaring throughout a wild game that featured six interceptions, eight turnovers on 10 fumbles and a marriage proposal via the scoreboard in the second quarter. A few minutes later, Sheilagh Delanty said yes, via Goguen’s the same scoreboard, to Bill Joe Faragalli time, but trailed 44-43 by the fourth quarter and needed a fumble by Eskimo punt returner Henry (Gizmo) Williams “He just dropped the ball,"’ said Eskimo head coach “At halftime, we came in and said if we don’t cough it up, we're going to win the ballgame and that's really a hell of a thing because that’s what eventually beat us."" Williams ran back a Terry Baker punt 32 yards, before fumbling the ball. Ottawa running back Reggie Barnes recovered the fumble on his own 36-yard line. Allen took over and, six question: plays later, handed the ball to running back David Conrad, who ran two yards for a touchdown at 9:19. Hilton hits comeback trail By CHRIS CARIOU The Canadian Press “Time!”’ barks Dave Hilton Sr His No. 3 son, Matthew, lets up on the punching bag Then it's back to work, training for a fight Matthew Hilton says he must win Got trainer “Hip, hip, hip,” Hilton gasps every time he hits the bag says his father, also his It sounds like ‘hit, hit, hit,”” and he did that well enough to win the junior middleweight championship of the world in 1987 But like the rest of the, Fighting Hiltons of Montreal, he lost a battle against personal problems, especially booze. He also lost the title, 17 months after he won it Now he’s on the comeback trail, 1403 Bay Ave. Trail, B.C. 368-5606 Come In & See Our In-Store Specials! “SERVICE IS OUR FIRST CONCERN" INTERNATIONAL K-9 CENTRE GRAND RE-OPENING Yes... we are back in business Tuesday, August 7 For all your dog grooming and training needs, call for an appointment today! I've had a lot of setbacks and mind problems. That's what I’ve got to change."” Hilton is the fourth child in a family of five boys and one girl Davey Jr., 26, has had run-ins with Police. Alex, 25, is serving time in a Quebec jail for weapons and drug charges. Stewart Hilton died at age 17 in 1986 when his car crashed near Mon- treal. His father said then: ‘‘It seems our family is doomed to everything that goes wrong."” Matthew, now 24, was the shining light of the four fighting Hiltons. He stayed out of trouble and became a world champion. “I thought I knew what I wanted and I got it, before I started letting go and not being responsible enough,”’ Matthew Hilton says. SIDELINES Canseco shooting for 60 OAKLAND, Calif. — Another home run binge has Jose Canseco talking historic numbers. Again ; ; “I think I can hit 60,"’ Canseco said after hitting his 30th and 31st of the season Wednesday. Mathematics say Canseco will have to pick up his pace to reach the 60-homer mark, but that’s only because he’s missed 20 games with a back injury. With eight home runs in his last nine games, including three two- homer games, Canseco has hit his 31 homers in 77 games — one every 2.48 games. If he were to continue that pace through Oakland's final 65 games, he'd finish with 57 home runs this season. Over a full 162-game schedule, that pace would translate into 65 homers. Oakland manager Tony La Russa says Canseco’s recent home-run bonanza is another indication how hot this slugger can get Ducey wants to leave Jays TORONTO — Rob Ducey, the one-time great Canadian baseball hope, has asked for his release from the Toronto Blue Jays, the Toronto Globe and Mail said Friday. ’ Ducey of Cambridge, Ont., has played parts of three seasons with Toronto, hitting .236 in 178 at-bats, but his average is hovering around 255 in Class AAA Syracuse. “‘He’s never gotten a full chance in Toronto," said Ducey’s agent, Steve Yormack. ‘‘He can help any major-league team, and he should get a chance to do so."” Ducey appeared to have made the Jays for good as the fourth outfielder in 1989 coming out of spring training, but the Jays faltered at the start of the season and manager Jimy Williams stuck with his top three outfielders — George Bell, Lloyd Moseby and Jesse Barfield. When Barfield was traded, it appeared Ducey would play more. But he hurt a knee during practice at the SkyDome when he fell through an unlocked outfield fence. He spent most of the rest of the season on the disabled list. He’s suing the SkyDome for $1 million. Canucks release bruiser Stanley VANCOUVER — Rugged left winger Daryl Stanley will not return to the Vancouver Canucks after an unproductive and injury-shortened 1989-90 season, the NHL club said Thursday. Stanley, 27, played just 23 games of spot duty last year before suffering torn tendons in the ring finger of his left hand on Jan. 13 against Buffalo. He had one goal and one assist. He became a free agent July 1 “*We probably would have offered Daryl a contract if Shawn Antoski hadn't been our draft pick,’’ late in the first round, said Canucks vice-president Brian Burke “That made him expendable. If Antoski doesn’t make it, Craig Coxe and Ron Stern will fill that role."’ The Canucks also will not offer contracts to three other minor- league free agents — right winter Jose Charbonneau and centres Steve Johnson and Keith Street.
