Saturday, March 14, 1992 Nine FIVE LONGER DISTANCE Prime ion spots in the province will be the target of a $30-million network expansion program throughout 1992, B.C. Cellular ‘announced Wednesday. The company will expand its coverage in the Gulf Islands and Active Pass this month while fishing areas at Port Hardy, the Shuswap Lake- Salmon Arm area and Oliver and Osoyoos will all receive coverage by early or mid- summer. PAPER CuT WorkPLACE fee WiiMe Denny McArthur is a guy who likes to ‘play a round’ Glen Freeman NEWS REPORTER Fresh, clean air, sunshine, exercise. “At times it doesn’t really feel like I’m working,” said Denny McArthur, resident pro at the Castlegar and District Golf Club. But he has been working, for Canfor Corp. cancelled its brown paper bag recycling program last month after losing 80 tonnes. of paper to plastic contamination. The company was repulping between one and two tonnes of used paper bags but plastic left in the bags contaminated the pulp and led to streaks and holes in the paper. A BORING PROJECT A Toronto-area company will design and build a giant tunnel- boring machine for CN North America’s new railway tunnel between Sarnia, Ont. and Port Huron, Mich., CN announced Wednesday. Lovat Tunnel Equipment was selected over German, Japanese and Austrian bids for the project, valued at about $15 million and scheduled for delivery in early 1993. 19 ns now. “I came to Castlegar thinking it would be nice to get out of Vancouver for a couple of years,” said McArthur, “And I just stayed. “The people here are friendly, there’s not that hairy pace of Vancouver, and [ get four months off in the winter to do whatever I want.” McArthur’s winter holiday was cut a little short this year by the beautiful spring weather. “We started playing golf last Saturday,” he said, adding that the golf Gods must be smiling on Castlegar. “This is the earliest I can remember opening up the Club. Usually we open for the last few days of March.” Currently, nine holes are open, but McArthur hopes to have all 18 in playing condition by the weekend. McArthur, now 48, doesn’t remember an age when he didn’t play golf. In fact, he turned professional before he graduated from his Vancouver high school. “I wasn’t even allowed for my high school team,” said McArthur, “because I wasn’t eligible to play in amateur tournaments.” He managed to get over the disappointment. “J trained for five years at the Glen Eagles Golf Club in North Vancouver, and there I learned all aspects of being a golf pro — buying, accounting, teaching, etiquette — you name it.” And, while still in his youth, McArthur began to give indoor golf lessons. “It was winter, so we lined up and hit balls into a canvas sheet,” he said. “It was better than nothing.” If whacking balls into a heavy sheet is better than nothing, then the Castlegar and News photo by Glen Freemari Denny McArthur has his sights set on yet another successful year at the Castlegar and District Golf Club. District Golf Club must be heavenly. “It’s a beautiful course,” said McArthur. “We have a great reputation for being a mountain golf course with 18 distinct holes.” And reputation is important for a course which relies heavily on tourism. “I would say that over half of our revenue comes from tourist dollars,” said McArthur. “So to keep the tourists coming in, we are forced to be competitive.” And being competitive means keeping up with change. It’s easy to see that this is not the same nine-hole, sand-green golf course that opened up in 1955. : “This club was once a doukhobor farm and mill — these nine holes were literally hacked out of the bush:” said McArthur. “Now we have 18 beautiful holes, a $500,000 watering system that made a great water hazard,.a restaurant where you can relax and have lunch, and we're always busy upgrading.” One thing that McArthur wishes he could spend more time upgrading is his golf swing. “People think that the pro does nothing but. golf,” he said, “but I’m lucky if I get out once a week. “This is a dawn to dusk job.” Some people might think that you would have to work dawn to dusk just to finance a golf habit, but McArthur says that isn’t so. “Our initiation fee amounts to less than one month’s worth of cigarettes,” said the one time smoker. So McArthur suggests that everyone quit smoking and take up golf. “It’s a better habit anyway,” he said. And for less than the price of two packs of smokes, kids from the ages of seven to 19 can have six golf lessons. “For 12 bucks, we supply a kid with clubs and a qualified instructor,” said McArthur. “I get a lot of satisfaction in helping a kid start out in golf.” And who knows. There might be one or two potential golf pros out there. So if you want to enjoy the fresh, clean air and sunshine while: you exercise, head up to the Castlegar and District Golf Club. : It won't even feel like you’re working. m@ Saturday, March 14, 1992 ‘23% Acti Action Ad Deadline For Saturday 5 p.m., Wednesday Display Ad Deadline For Saturday. 5 p.m., Wednesday Action Ad Deadline for Wednesday Display Ad Deadline For Wednesday 5 p.m., Monday 5 p.m., Friday ACTION ADS — 365-7266 v ANNOUNCEMENTS 3 Anniversaries FRED AND GERTIE Konkin invite you to celebrate their 50th Wedding Anniversary on Saturday, March 21, 1992.
