ROSSLAND EVENING RECORD, NOVEMBER 21, 1808. IS AN OLD TIMER. Issuo of the London Times of 1805 Containing Some Odd Notices. J, Gospey Kelly, of London England, sent to our fellow townsman, Andy Revebeck, a facsimile of the London Times, dated Nov. 7 1805, which Mr. Revebeck kindly loaned this office. It ia a four page four column, and No, 6572, It contains no display advertiaement. The merchants in those days did not use the newspapers, for ‘‘fire sales” “great bargain sales” etc. The ‘‘nuree, housemaid, laundrymaid and_ the coachman” used the Times to find situ- ations. Lost doga were sought through its columns. Here ida sample: ‘Lost, an old pointer dog, white with red spote. Answers to name of Basto;almost blind, one eye quite gone. Any person bring- ing the said dog to No. 153 Swallow ‘street, Piccadilly, shall receive one guinea reward and reasonable expenses paid.” One would judge that even that far back dogs were held for a. higher record for the owner addsan “N. B.” which reads, ‘‘No greater reward will be effer - A‘“nursery of housemnid” advertises for work as follows: “A young woman (initiated in the dressmaking) in a res- pectable family,” and another, “A steady young woman wants work where a footman is kept.” Another saya she “can make up small linnen and work well atthe needle.” The laundry maid says she ‘tunderatands her business hav- ing always lived in that capacity.”” The coachman saya he ‘‘can have a good character from his last place.” Here’s one: ‘“'A genteel youth is anxious to learn the profession of .a printer—well educated.” How times have changed! Old Shylock shows up in those days as follows: “Noblemen and persons of fashion immediately supplied with money to any amount.” He pledged himself to secretly and?delicately, not generally ap- plicable to money lenders, and that his business it is conducted above the ordin- ary of _ A lady wishes to engage as companion toa young or middle-aged lady. Be- sides being ‘‘a perfect musician” she can speak French and Italian, is agood hair- dresser and well versed in fancy needle work,”? “Mr. J. Murcott, wants to sell an old established and very complete pack of bony harriers, 20 inches high; also four capital well-bred hunters, equal great weights, in good condition, warranted sound and free from blemish.” The Times announces that “His Maj- esty wears a green shade constantly over his eyes, after candle-light and cannot distinguish any person except he be very near, and with the assistance ofa glass,” Then it says: ‘‘Wearevery sorry.” "This iejthe number of the Times which gives the first account of the naval en- gagement between the British navy un- der Lord Nelson and French and Span- ish fleets, at which Nelson was killed and 20 of the opposing vessels sunk. Itis a very interesting number but vividly illustrates the greal strides jour- nalism has made since 1805. ~ Carnival Committee.
