lONPAGE PVC .. ALK Thursday of the past week we laid another of our good friends t4) rest in a plot in a cemetery on the side of a mountain above Kaslo. The occasion was the funeral of William Owen "Buck" Jones, a friend of long standing and a man woom I believe was among the best liked people in our town during his years of residency here. Legion members who attended from Branch No. 14 were Chuck Harkness, Toby Edworthy, Henry Matthews, Henry Foster, Joe Thahnan, Jimmy Flanders, Jack Molyneux, Doug Cavill, Herb Castle, Norm Harry and his son Eric and myself. Also from the L.A. were Grace Harry and Jean Dustan. There was also a goodly turnout from the Kaslo branch and the tiny Catholic Church in Kaslo was packed beyond seating capacity, a real tribute to a man who, during his lifetime, I'm sure never said ''no" to a friend in need. The service, conducted by Rev. Father Boyle of the Kaslo church, was a model of 1 _ simplicity, ritual was kept to an absolute minimum and the eulogy by Father Boyle was ooe of the best I have ever beard. He started by saying that he s was ,;resent when "Buck" was married in Nelson 40 years ago. He didn't say be performed that ceremony too, I found that out from a longtime friend of both men, Ralph Berry. He told of sitting with the family to fill in the blank spaces for him, when Buck moved to Rossland and came up with a pretty accurate picture of the man. Buck never allowed bis family to want for anything even if it meant lx>lding down more than one job at a time to attain that goal, even when he was not too well and suffered quite a lot of pain. Father Boyle said that while Buck could not really be called a practicing Catholic he practised the deeds which form the basis for religion, doing all the good he could for bis own and any others in need. I can attest, along with a number of other people in Rossland, that you only bad to ask him to help out in any project that was under way and you could consider it done. I also worked side by side with Buck on some of the extra jobs he took on and never ceased to marvel at the tireless way he worked at them, with a grin and a wisecrack to ease any tensions that might arise. Now he is gone, we extend our sympathy to the members wittl twry Pepper of bis family at this time and add this thought; it must help a little to know the esteem in which be was held by bis fellow men in all walks of life. For my part, I can say I was proud to be selected to conduct the Legion's graveside ritual with so many of his friends and relatives present. Over the past weekend the Warriors split a pair of games on home ice, the first a loss to Trail Friday evening before a reasonably good crowd. The Warriors never did get it going for that one and took quite a trimming. The defence came up flat in front of the goalies and consequently they were really bombarded while at the other end Dan McFarland in the Trail net had a comparatively easy evening. Once again Ray Ferraro had a bonus evening and Ken McNeil, just returned from Junior "A" camp, has shown he can help the sometimes questionable Trail defence. • Sunday afternoon the Elk Valley Raiders were in town and for two periods they kept the Warriors hopping. Actually it was a young fellow by the name of Hynes who kept the East Kootenay team in the game, stopping 19 to 20 shots fired at him in the first period but had it a little easier in the second as bis mates carried the game to the Warriors, who suffered, yet another, secondperiod letdown. In the third, as they have done in a number of games this season, the Warriors recovered their pose, with the help of a rash of Raider penalties, and outscored Elk Valley 6-1 to take a 9-4 win. In the Rossland net, Hoss Drake played another good game and the defence started to lay on the weight in answer to the Raiders defensive tactics which consisted mainly of taking the man rather than the puck. It had worked for two· periods but when the Warriors picked it up in the hitting department, the R-AidAl"llJtid ' m rlillAh- - - " a11Un, e Warriors recovered their poae, with the help of a raab of Raider penalties, and outlcored Elk Valley 6-1 to take a M win. In the Roaland net, Bola Drake played another good game and the defence started to lay on the w~ in answer to the Raiders defensive tactics l'hich consisted maililf 'of takq the IDE rather than the puck. It bad worked for two· periods but when the Warrlora picked It up in the hitting department, tbe Raiders didn't seem to re1lsb it. Scoring for Rosaland were John Caron with two good goals, newcomer John Jorgenson with two from the point and Marty Llmtte with two, the Nuaroff lrotben, Billy and Jim, chipped in with one each and Bart Camaratta finlsbed"' a real hustlins game with a goal. He'd been · digging in front of the Raider net all afternoon and was the recipient of a lot of rough handling around there but It finally paid off. We bad no speaker system Sunday so I didn't get all the details, but Bert will have bad them for you in hla report cn the game. We seem to be getting a lot of rumors going the rounds about players quitting the club, with most of thoae I have beard, I have wait.eel for confirmation before sayq anything. However, the complaint seems to be that 101De of the local boys are not happy with the amount of lee time they are getting in games and Jractice. 'Ibis would appear to be a problem that should be solved by the coaches, not cne for the rumor mill. I don't like people coming around and telling me, almost gleefully, it seeme, that a couple mare of the Warriors are quitting. The addition of Grant Soukos to the team lbould help. We saw him perfarm Sunday, and be loob 88 though be will flt into the team OK, he's another big one too. Billy Muaroff bad bl8 best game of the season Sunday and when be is right you have to go a long way to top him. John Caron also played a good strong game. As I write thla the Phllllea are on top in the World Serie& and It looks as though, 88 they bead heme for the last two games they should have an edge. 1bat tremendous com~ frcm-behlnd ability of tbelra must have an effect on the opposition's morale. Umer, Rose, Trillo and Sowa seem to make things happen and tbm they have the Tagger to take care of the opposition bats when It ccmea down to the nitnr~ttv-- - - - - - -
