Some parents will hate Nonsuch because it will make their kids think too much. The first words from the mouth of XTC singer-song- writer Andy Partridge area forceful yet inviting “Lets be- They do, and the driving bass and catchy beat doesn’t stop for the next 65 minutes. ‘The Scottish band immedi- ately rips into organized reli- gion with The Ballad of Peter Pumpkinhead, a corny title with an anything but corny theme. Peter is a fictional character who “fed the starving and housed the poor, showed the Vatican what gold is for.” Controversial yes, but at least in makes listeners won- der why God would want $8 million from Oral Roberts any- way. Imagine. All that education and what a tune, too. Books are Burning takes is- sue with censorship, and will no doubt offend the narrow- minded Neanderthals who so desperately want to burn this album. Even though Bungalow has a good message — life is too important to waste by working yourself into an early grave — it proves that a message with- out a tune doesn’t cut it on a compact disc. But the other 16 songs pick up the tab and pay for this disc time and time again. XTC’s album Nonsuch is... ris and roll as it was meant to e. It’s rebellious yet fun, not the hard-driving head-banging music of some of today’s skid rockers, but you won't mistake this group of artists for ABBA any day.
