‘D6 : i olay wee, CASTLEGAR NEWS, Thursday, July 5, 1979 Bridge Beat By JOY KEILLOR Preemptive Bids To be a winning bridge player you must learn to use avery effective psychological 4KQIxxxx vx eK xxx myx and tactical bidding weapon. It is called Preemptive bid- ding (weak freak). All really clever bridge players realize that in the long run it is profitable to offer the oppo- nents a small penalty bonus ‘in an attempt to keep them ‘out of a makable game or slam. : Of course your judge- ment has to be accurate so that you don't give them more points than they would have earned if they had got the contract. When a good player opens the bidding with a suit bid of ‘three’ or ‘four’, you can rest assured that he has a poor hand in high cards, but, a long ‘freak suit’. Usually the hand con- tains 10 or less high card points and seven or more ecards in the suit. When more than half of the 13 cards you hold are of one suit, your hand is very poor defending your opponents contract, so it is usually wise to leap the bidding right up to the brink of disaster in order to take away the enemy's bidding space. To keep from going over the brink you must estimate ; how many tricks you can win ‘at your own long suit con- tract and then overbid no more than two tricks if you are vulnerable, three tricks if you are not vulnerable. + In judging your hand for ~ , one of these shutout bids, the * important factor is how many tricks you will be able to win. ‘ i.e. probable winners. Extreme Example ax WSIOXXXXXXXK ox aX Two leads of hearts, _ since you hold 10 of them, should drive out all three of the missing heart cards mak- ing the remaining eight heart cards winners. In this extreme example you will probably win no tricks at all, if it is played in any suit except hearts. If your heart -suit be- comes the trump suit, you ought to be able to capture eight or nine heart tricks. If your partner has a hand, you should be able to make four hearts. If the opponents have good hands, “. and are allowed to talk over their hands, they will prob- ably be able to reach their correct game or slam con- tract. Ineither case, you ought to bid four hearts. This will tell your partner your hand type, and it will destroy the ability of your opponents to find out much about each other's hands. Opening Three Bid: 1, Ten or less high card points 2, A seven-card or long- er suit 3. Probable winning tricks based on the rule of two or three. (If vulnerable, you may risk, two tricks of your contract. If not vulner- able, the risk margin is three tricks. This means seven probable winners in your hand if you're vulnerable, six probable winners, if not vulnerable. Opening four Bid: A four level bid is a much more effective shut-out than a three bid, so it is advisable to make the full shut-out bid whenever pos- sible. The requirements for the four bid are exactly the same as for the three bid, except the hand must contain one extra ‘probable winner’ still available at Camp Kool- (Seven pi winning tricks. This hand should be opened if vulnerable, three spades, if not vulnerable, four spades.) Probable Winners Formula TRUMP SUIT: Count how many tricks you will probably win with the first three leads of the trump suit. In the above hand the first three cards in your spade suit contains two sure winners. Add one winner for each trump card in excess of your first three so K,Q,J = two winners plus x,x,x,x = four winners totalling six probable winners in your trump suit, SIDE SUIT: Count how many tricks you will probably win with the first three leads of the suit. The diamond king, in the above hand is worth one-half a winning trick since it may or may not produce a trick (depending where the ace is) and the fourth dia- mond will develop into a thirteener if the outstanding diamonds are no more than three long in each of the opponents hands. This fourth three spades, not vulnerable fouls spades as PQuxxxxx=8 *AQxx = ax = 5 Total Winners 8 Correct Bid; Vulnerable four hearts, not vulnerable four hearts. ax =0 VAXXXXXXXXST oxXx ax : Total Winners 7 Correct Bid: Vulnerable three hearts, not vulnerable four hearts Probable Winner Chart TRUMP SUIT: Count each trick in ex- cess of three as one trick, SIDE SUIT: Count each card in ex- cess of three as one-half of a trick provided your oppo- nents haven't bid that suit.
