For two years Post played around in his barn endeavoring to produce his first commercial batch of Postum. Within a year the company was growing and profitable. Sales were of a cycli- cal nature, always peaking in winter and dropping drastically in summer. To balance sales, C. W. came up with another winner — Grape Nuts. ~ By 1905 colorful, dynamic C. W. This article, by Dave Smith in the Vancouver Sun, tells of the Moonies’ activities in B.C., and outlines the cult’s history. . * There is a knock on the door. You open it and find a clean-cut youth selling choc- olates. Ask what the money is for and the answer is vague, possibly some men- tion of the Unification Church. That is how Moonies in B.C. campaign to obtain money for their cause — money that could run into millions of dollars, claims a former cult member and critic of the church whose members, are known as “Moonies.” ‘A check with commun- ities in B.C. showed that a team of Moonies attempted this spring to obtain licences to sell confectionery door-to- door, without always explain- ing who they represent. Ian Haworth, is a former member of People Searching Inside (PSI), a mind-develop- ment group and one of the organizers of the Toronto- based COMA (Council on Mind Abuse) which special- izes in educating people against the dangers of mind control. He describes himself as “an ex-cult: member.” He says fund-raising teams, usually with seven people per team, work in three areas, the West, Cen- tral Canada and the Mari- times. They are highly mo- bile and often travel in rented vans. Each member can earn up to $400 a day selling chocol: WK citizens contacted city council last ‘November. In Prince George, city licence inspector Dave Strawbridge says a permit to sell confectionery door-to- door was issued to Les Remage on Oct. 17, 1979, and was renewed Jan. 3, 1980. The permit is‘ good for this year, he adds. It was issued to the Unification Church, since Remage showed that he was connected withit, No official were meade three inV centre of the Unification Church as Heller and two females, Dilys Hankins and Sylvie De Ferre. They list their names on the application form as Danielle Brousseau, - Debbie Edmunson, Mubina Jaffer and Aimee Valeur. Three of them write their address on the applica- tion as 1125 Haro. They are issued licences to sell, but it is later determined they are of the church ig He said the Unification Church has 85 members in Canada and that he obtained the amount that Moonies make from the former “No. 2” Moonie in Canada, Martin in Canada, says North. “I asked them at the time (of application) if they belonged to the church,” North said, “They said ‘No, we're four, girls who want. In Kamloops on March 21 a licence to-sell candy door-to-door is given to Ed- ward Hoderek and Pierre Beauregard — the names listed on the application form. A series of complaints from residents are made at city hall. They say the solicitors are working for the Unification Church, : The council quickly re- | -Moonies canvassing throughout t voked their licence. Moon could be a messiah, but a messiah is a person who could save the world. Whether he can save the world or not,'the future will prove. I think he has the potential to be a messiah more so than anybody else.” The roots of Lhe Moonie * of six to eight people, he says he raised, “over a quarter of a million dollars": and it all went to the church.“ - Heller is asked if churh - leader Sun Myung Moon, -a wealthy industrialist, is a millionaire. 4 He replies: “He might be.
