With the bonuses, the Mint confirmed this week that Sandler earned $480,480 Canadian in 1984 and $2.73 million Canadian in 1985. ‘The Maple Leafs gold coin is an investment coin, minted in Canada and bought and around the world in $5, $10 and $50 denominations. Half the gold mined in Canada ends up in Maple Leafs. One Canadian bullion expert said sales of the Maple Leaf coin took off in 1985 because its major competitor, the South African Krugerrand, lost its American market because of the actions of opponents of South Africa's apartheid policy. Bullion experts in Toronto and New York were surprised by the fees paid to Sandler. Toronto investment counsellor Peter Cavelti, president of Cavelti Capital Management Co., and an authority of gold bullion, said he found the figures extremely high for any consulting contract. “How many people in the stock and bullion business have a $250,000 contract plus $50,000 expenses plus a guaranteed incentive? “I know of very few.” VANCOUVER (CP) — If Charles Baldwin objects to the way the B.C. Government Employees Union spends his dues, he should join the union and voice his concerns, a lawyer suggested Tuesday. John Baigent, appearing in the B.C. Supreme Court for the union, said Baldwin cannot look to the Charter of Rights and Freedoms to correct what he perceives as an infringement of his rights. Baldwin's lawyer, Peter Gall, has asked the court to declare the BCGEU cannot use money from membership dues without first getting permission of each member. He also wants the to state the union's use of membership dues for purposes other than collective bargaining is i i with the ituti Charter doesn't apply? prevent governments infringing on citizens’ rights, said the corrective clauses don't apply to private entities, such as unions. But Gall argued the government is involved in the BCGEU because provincial legislation requires all government employees to be members of the union. “In effect, we have government legislation compell- ing (Baldwin) to support a political movement he doesn't believe in,” Gall said. “The union derives its power to make him pay his dues from the government.” Baldwin, 45, a corrections officer at the Burnaby Community Correctional Centre, opted out of union membership when the BCGEU was certified in 1974, but Mr. Justice Albert Mackoff reserved judgment on a preliminary motion in which Baigent asked the court to hold that Baldwin's grievance isn't a Charter matter. Baigent, pointing out the Charter is intended to is req’ under to pay union dues. He objects to a portion (about $1.20 a month) of his $377 annual dues being used by the ufion to help finance organizations such as Solidarity, the movement opposed to certain Social Credit policies. A New York trader, who wished to remain anonymous, agreed. “The numbers for 1984 are high but they're not shocking,” he said. “The 1985 figures are shocking.” The terms of the contract were that Sandler received 50 cents for each ounce of Maple Leaf gold sold above 850,000 ounces and incremental increases up to $2 for every ounce sold over 1,500,000 ounces. In return he provided marketing strategies and plans, introduced the Mint to major bullion trade in Europe, Hong Kong and other Asian centres, increased the number of distributors from eight to 19 and established the Mint as a major player in international bullion trading. The gold coins earned the Mint $1.3 billion Canadian in the two years of Sandler's contract. Today the gold Maple Leaf coin is the most successful gold coin in the world, well ahead of its rivals, the South African Krugerrand and the Mexican 50 peso gold coin.
