Heslop, a professor at the Carleton University business school. Heslop has done ex- tensive research into the consumer behavior of children, “‘Money is like sex,"’ she says. “If we don't tell them something, they'll pick it up somewhere else. And it won't necessarily be an attitude you'll be happy about."" ‘ Chris Snyder, a Toronto-based financial planner and author of How to Teach Your Children About ADVICE experiment with budgeting, saving, and making their own Money, agrees money should be kept in proper perspective, “Sometimes people put too much emphasis on it," Snyder says. “Parents have got to show their children what money can do for them, but also what its limitations are.** Children become intrigued with the idea of acquiring things when they're @s young as two, Snyder says. They're easy victims of advertising and com- mercial materialism because they ac- cept everything they’re told at face value. “They see ads on television for toys and they want them immediately,” Snyder says. “If you can show them money must be exchanged to get the toy, that money doesn’t come in unlimited amounts and that choices must be made, you've made a good Children should be encouraged to decisions, Snyder says. Snyder and Heslop offer the following tips: Allowance: Most children are ready for an allowance .when they Start to rack up some expenses of their own. Children are also better off spen- . ding their own money on candy_and toys, because it teaches them the need for choice, Heslop adds. If the parent, Pays, the source seems bottomless. “Sit down once a year with them and look at their obligations,"’ Heslop advises. **Whether it’s Guides or books at school, there are pressures on kids."* Heslop -sets-the-sum-she-gives-her own children, but she lets them decide when they'll get it. Odd jobs: Heslop encourages her children to earn extra money. “Simply handing out more allowance just reinforces the idea that mom or dad is a bottomless pit. Get- ting the child to work for the money makes them feel like they deserve the money since they earned it."” Children should only be paid for extraordinary household jobs, such as * washing the windows or weeding the garden, adds Snyder. Rules need not vafy much for older teens, Heslop says. She worries that too many teenagers are encouraged to work part-time, or full-time, robbing them of valuable study or recreation time. “*A teenager's primary role is that of student, not worker. If the quest for money_and what it buys is over- whelming, \ that’s an attitude problem.” Bank accounts: Kids can open an account with as little as $1 — and they'll learn about the value of saving when the interest grows. Snyder’s children, now 20, 16 and 14, used the interest they earned to buy a family computer. teckescoress sorvces nee Manatee Sateeeseecerye 52 Corpenter /Brickioyers/Pointers Shop tang RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT 57 Anciyticd Serdces SA Technica Research Canter mouse and Found’y Storage 69 Woste Contro!
