SUPPRESSING THE TRUTH.

Mr. Higgins has-put the- govern-
ment in a predicament by unearth-
ing- a letter, dated-June 6, ©1899,
from Hon. J. Fred Hume, the min-
ister of mines, fo t secretary of
the Nelson District’ ing. associa-
tion, which reads: .

“T beg to acknowledize your let-
ter of the 26th ult., stating that the
council. .of the’. Nelson board: of
trade would esteem it a favor if the
government would inform them as
to the reasons the government had,
in the first place, in assenting to the
eight-hour law; and,:secondly, after
the action of the law had been . held
in abeyance for a time, ultimately
to decide ‘upon its enforcement,

refused to contribute in any manner
to the expense of the company of
scouts which British Columbia has
offered for the war. Hence the
mayor of Vancouver has made a
proposal that, with transportation
provided by the ‘provincial govern-
ment, each city shall provide the
clothing and equipment of its quota
at the rate of $75 per head, either
by furnishing men who provide
tfieir own equipment or by raising
funds for the purpose among the
people.

It is doubtless disappointing that
the Dominion government will not
aid the patriotic efforts of the prov-
ince in any way, but, should the’
good work be carried through with-
eut its aid, the entire credit will -be
due the province. The peculiar
fitness of the men of British Colum-
dia for service in South Africa has
been overlooked until the recruiting
for Strathcona’s Horse began and
the cool reception with which the
