How much control do you have over getting what you really want out of life? Control over the way you're living it at present? Contrel over who is part of it? Contro! over plans and goals? Control over where your life is spent? How might you take more control of your own life? future If you take less control in any of these areas than you would like, ask yourself what keeps you from ii for several days noting pre- scisely how you spend all of your time. For example: 7:00 a.m. — Got up, took shower, got dressed, made bed. 7:30 a.m. — Made coffee, fed dog and took dog out, made breakfast. 7:45 a.m. — Ate break- fast, read newspaper. 8:16 am, — Cleared breakfast dishes, cleaned up kitchen, got food out for dinner. 8:30 a.m. — Dropped daughter at school, mailed letters, put gas in the car, went to 9 a.m. meeting. The kinds and levels of needs you have, and the types and degrees of changes you want to make are mat- ters of personal choice. No particular needs or wants are being advocated here, only a process by which you can become more effective in meeting your own personal needs. These needs can be of many kinds: emotional, psy- chological, material, physical, recreational. They can include a need or want to have more free time, get married, get a college degree, get a better job, get divorced, learn a new skill, become more athletic, be with your children more often, get a job to earn money, get a job for personal achievement, not have chil- more control? Can you change that? If not, why not? If so, how? BECOMING AWARE OF YOUR NEEDS AND WANTS Becoming aware of your personal needs and wants is a first step in taking more _ responsibility for your life. Although the idea of knowing that one’s own needs and wants all seem obvious, it is not at all — especially for women who have been train- ed to think of others’ needs, to be nurturant, giving unsel- fishly to children, family, bosses. Becoming more aware of how you actually spend your time day by day, and how you feel about it, can give you an indication of what present needs of yours are being met and which ones are not. Whatever your own per- sonal needs include, this is merely a first step in a series of moves which, hopofully, never ends, As you gain confidence in your ability to meet more of your needs, on your own and in your re- lationships with others, you will become involved in new Sierra Club work in Voinall: Ranga ‘Members extend park trail Sixteen Sierra Club members have recently re- turned from a work trip in the Valhalla Range west of Slocan Lake. Their objective was to add on to the existing New Denver Glacier trall, which presently does not reach the well-known glacier. According to project -leader Alan Schmierer, about eight-tenths of a mile of new trail was built, “Probably our most significant achievement. was to push the trail through a dense alder slide,” said: new new problems, and will con- tinue to analyso, assess and evaluate your needs, For example, at one point in your life .you may have strong needs to have children and spend a good deal of time with them; at another point you may have strong needs to achieve some professional goals, Or, as is becoming more and more common, you will find it necessary to work to earn money so you may set out to find and get prepared for jobs you would like to have in the future. When you have some idea about the needs in your life that you want to meet, the next step is learning ways to bring about changes in your life in an effective way, especially when those changes will affect other people. “As a reault, we have already greatly increas- ed the hiker's access to the New Denver Glacier and vicinity.” Workers on the trail project came from as far away as San Francisco and Michigan, and as close as New Denver and Nelson. One trip member hailed from Dublin, Ireland. Besides being respon- sible for their own transpor- tation, each volunteer had to pay a $65 trip fee in order to participate. For this reason, four days of the project time was devoted to more leisure- ly pursuits, such as day hikes and nature walks, Even with provisions for free time, however, project volunteers were asked why one would want to pay money in order to do heavy manual elpants, so far from home, According to the volun- teers, there are good rea- sons, Said one: “I like the’ feeling that I'm doing some- thing constructive for wilder- ness, that I'm helping to give people ‘the opportunity to‘ appreciate and enjoy the Vathalias.” Another reason for join- ing the trail project, accord- ing to some trip fe of the Valhalla Society were particularly helpful in ar- ranging billets fer our volun- teers and transportation ‘across Slocan Lake,” he said. Local Sierra Club mem- ber Lawson ‘LeGate, who helped to organize the trail project, explained that the B.C. Parks Division and the B.C. Forest Service had sup- plied tools used in: building the trail. He added, however, that the Forest Service had no budget to build or maintain trails on the Crown land under its jurisdiction in the Valhallas.
