BA essnecar NEWS’ Thursday,’ May’24,’ 1979 SoS Take the high roads in the 5% West Kootenays and you are apt % to get where you're going much faster than if you had taken the & low roads. & Not only that, you'll see some 2 of the most spectacular mountain % scenery that British Columbia has to offer, & There two. notable high © shortcuts: the new Highway 3 $: section between Castlegar and $: Salmo, which just opened last & fall, and the section of Highway 3 3 between Salmo and Creston, 5 often referred to as the Kootenay *} Skyway, which opened in 1964. s* Both replaced longer round- about routes, which the traveller still has the option of taking. These old low routes are beautiful, too, and are excellent byways for the more meditative driver, * The new Casth Sal SEPT SEIT ‘ LOW ROADS ARE GREAT, TOO Reaching new highs | in the west Kootenays By Olga Osing walting for and riding on the fe ITY, ‘The Skyway, which is part of Stag Leap Park, is Canada's highest cast-west pass at 1774 metres. Much photographed Brida Lake is on the summit. BONANZA PASS The old route up the lake to the ferry landing is still highly recommended. Now called Highway 3A, it - continually twists. over and above the lakeshore, offering at every turn a feast for the eyes. Another high and beautiful section of Highway 3 is the 47 kilometres between Christina Lake and the junction of Highway 3B, 26 kilometres west of Castlegar. Its Bonanza Pass is marked at 1535 metres. At Nancy Greene Lake is a inci where ‘ 8 stretch is 38.8 kilometres long, some 28.6 kilometres shorter than the old route which gocs from Castlegar down through Trail and Fruitvale and on to Salmo. MAGNIFICENT VIEW From the 1215-metre-high summit there is a magnificent view of the Castlegar area and surrounding mountains. The opening of the 82- kilometre-long Skyway meant that travellers no longer had.to drive up the west side of Kootenay Lake to Kootenay Bay where they would have to wait for a free ferry ride across to Balfour before heading down to Nelson and thence westwards. The new. link, skirting thé southem tip of the big lake, chopped off at least 70 kilometres to the Salmo junc- tion, not to mention time lost P ‘one can go fishing or swimming. If you tum off Highway 3 on to Highway 3B, the route goes by Red Mountain, one of Wester Canada’s best-known ski areas, and then curves above Rossland. Any stop on this stretch offers mountain scenery at its best. BACKROAD HEIGHTS East of Rossland is the old route of Highway 3, now an extension of 3B, which goes through Trail and then on to Salmo. Another option is to take Highway 22, which forms the main street of Rossland, up to Castlegar. All in all, there is a variety of scenic loops you can devise for yourself by consulting your road map and combining both high and low roads. That is not to mention the old Cascade Highway which is no longer found on road maps. This is only recommended for hardy backroad adventurers in sturdy vehicles, The Cascade goes from Rossland to Christina Lake but it is only maintained to the homes in the Big Sheep Creek Valley ‘on the other side of the First Summit near Rossland. Motorists continue farther at their own risk. TWO SUMMITS First Summit is one of two summits on the Cascade. The other is Santa Rosa (sometimes called the Second Summit) near Christina Lake, Despite ‘its.. roughness, this seldom-travelled backroad en- ticed the Vintage Car Club of Canada to sponsor a drive over its entire length in 1977. But before th trip was undertaken, club, members cleared the highway over the Santa Rosa. ‘The'trip took 4% hours over'the 64-kilometre-long road. For more top scenery in the’ West Kootenays, take Highway 6 up.the Slocan Valley and along Slocan Lake to New Denver and then head east on Highway 31A. to the turnoff to the ghost town of Sandon. SHORT HIKE Beyond Sandon the dirt road curves .up the side of Idaho Mountain towards a lookout. ‘When the road ends, there is a short hike to see the sweeping view of the Slocan Lake and its small villages, the surrounding mountains, and the New Denver Glacier on the far side of the lake. Here there are also alpine meadows. Of course, climbing to the top of mountains inva car is the ultimate luxury in mountaineer- ing. You experience great scenery going up and coming down, And even though you may be taking a high shortcut, it is difficult to be ina hurry when the impulse is to constantly stop and take out camera. : B.C. Government Photo Cherry Fruit Fly Fight; Control Sprays Advised M. J. Sanders, P. Ag. District Hortleulturist Cherry fruit flies damage cherries by infesting cherry fruit with white maggots or worms. The adults ‘are now active, so control sprays should be applied, . Growers who are trapping ‘frult les with ‘aticky boards can delay spraying until they catch a cherry fruit fly or until 16 days before harvest, but those not using timing dovices should spray as soon as pos- sible, Probably the most effec- - tive material for cherry fruit fly control is dimethoate, which can be purchased under the brand names of Cygon or Rogor. On cherries which re- ceived good fruit fly control last year, only one dimethoate’ spray will be required, but where a heavy infestation oc- curred two sprays will be needed, the second being ap- plied 16 days after the first application. . For cherry fruit fly control, dimethoate must be sprayed to the trees and not on the bark. Do not apply dimethoate within 15 days before harvest. Dimethoate Application Notes Larger Plantings: Rogor four pounds per gallon, EC at two pints per acre or 10 fluid ounces per 100.gallons of water; or Cygon 4.8 pounds per gallon. EC at 82 fluid ounces per acre or eight fluid ounces per 100 gallon of water. Smaller Plantings: Cygon 26 at one teaspoon per. gallon of water; or Rogor four pounds per gallon, EC at ‘teaspoon per gallon of water; or Cygon 4.8 pounds per gallon. EC at teaspoon per gallon of water. Growers who decide not to use dimethoate can use Diazi- non, Perthane, or Sevin. These materials must be applied every, 10-days and re-applied after rains, so up to five or six sprays may be needed under this control program, On cherries, do not apply; Diazinon within 10 days of harvest; Sevin within one day of harvest, or Perthane within two days of harvest. 1 Remember to read all pesticide labels for dosages and directions. Information on cherry fruit fly contro! can be obtained from . the B.C. ministry of agriculture in Creston. Try a Soak It's Better Than a Shrink a soak instead of 2 shrink the next time pressure wrings you out, That advice comes from a medical practitioner, Dr. Paul Fleming of Raleigh, NC. The recommended soak _ takes place in a hot tub, a huge redwood, or cypress vat or your own bathtub filled with pul- sating warm water-ranging in temperature from 100° to 106°. “I don’t need a psychiatrist because I've got the oppor- tunity to get rid of my tensions the same day, not let them build up,” Fleming says. He uses his tub to relax after a day's work. “If you've ever been in one, you'll know it’s the most re- laxing thing imaginable. It’s the most natural form of relaxation. You can't imagine how that " 100° water can feel circulating around you. It's over-whelming. The hot tub is an expen- sive item — anywhere from $1,600 to $2000 — that ori- ginated in California and is making its way across North America. Tubs are normally made of redwood in the West, but at least one eastern supplier is fashioning them out of vypress, Pulse - Chic - H.LS.
