Trapper's life disrupted

EDMONTON (CP) —
Morin felt he had almost a
perfect’ life on his remote
northwestern Alberta trap-
line until crews searching for
natural gas descended on the

area.

Morin, 41, has earned most
of his livelihood for the last
18 years from a trapline cov-
ering 400 square kilometres
near the Chincago River and
the B.C. border.

“It was great tobe out
there all alone in the bush,
doing my thing, minding my
own business, not hurting
anyone. and making a few
dollars, Morin said.in. a. tele-
phone interview.

honest living. I was lonely for
female company, but I was a
very happy man.”

Now he has a girlfriend,
but his quiet life has suffered
from a burst of gas explor-
ation in the area.

“It’s the activity, the traf-
fic. They bring cats (cater-
pillar tractors) in there,
they've run over some of my
traps with vehicles, they
plowed under some traps.
Trees have been knocked
down where I had traps for
many years.”

Worried about vehicles hit-
ting. his dog team, he posted
warning signs last spring on

trails cleared by exploration
crews. Signs were torn
down and he finally had to
give up the dog team.

near his eabin ruined his
sleep. Some traps were bull-
dozed when Voyageur Petro-
eum recently moved in a
service rig.
