Page 6B ' For The The Castlegar Sun Wednesday, June 28, 1995 + YOUNG at HEART Straight talk about sex and seniors Adult children sometimes think aging parents don't have sex. They are in for a pleasant surprise as they age them- selves and find that fewer demands on their time means more opportunity and energy for intimacy It isn’t that age doesn’t bring changes that challenge sexual activity. It does. It also brings the wisdom to adjust to change. Research shows that many people lead active, satis- fying sex lives well into their nineties. Chances are you can be one of them if you choose to be Sexual desire does not nec- essarily fade with your hair color—although you'd think so if you base your premise on youth-oriented advertising and the media in general. If on the other hand, you're optimistic about your sexuality as you age you'll find a way to fulfill your expectations The same lifestyle choices that help you maintain general good health in later life, will stimulate your sex life too healthy food choices, exercise, stress reduction and enjoyment of hobbies and friends. Smok- ing has an adverse effect on sex—so does over-indulgence of alcohol. Something you might not expect to affect your libido and sexual performance is medication. Most older adults have at least one medical con- dition. Some have a number of disorders that require drugs. Doctors have reported that about a quarter of all sexual problems are caused by medi- cation. But they also want you to know that ‘you should be can- did with your doctor if you're concerned about impotence or reduced desire. Blood pressure pills can be culprits. So can tranquilizers, arthritis medications and antidepressants. Some over- the-counter drugs can be a problem too—pain killers for example. Your doctor can Adjust doses.or change drugs to help, but don’t even think about making changes without consultation. Warding off loneliness Loneliness is a state of dejec- tion and grief caused by being alone. This feeling strikes more than one-third of seniors at some time or another. According to “The Second 50 Years” by Walter J. Cheney, William J. Diehm and Frank E. Seeley, 77 per cent of all seniors living alone are women. Widowhood is the most common reason for women to live alone, although it is not the only reason. Men who live alone are likely to be divorced or never married. The large discrepancy between the num- ber of men and women who live alone occurs because The Robson Firefighters and the Robson Ladies Auxiliary recently presented the Robson Senior Citizens Association, Branch 146, with $651.25 which was raised at a spaghetti supper held at the Robson Fire Hall May 6. If you are lonely, here are some sure-fire ways to help ward off those lonely feelings. + Keep busy—Get involved in everything that grabs your attention, write letters, visit people, or take up a hobby. Every little and medium-size thing you do can grow into a significant project. + Help others—Look for oth- ers who are just as lonely as yourself. While helping them to feel less alone, you will be cur- ing yourself of the same ailment. * Involve yourself—The burned-out condition that many retirees seem to feel leads to a mental attitude of loneliness. Instead of sitting in a chair all day and watching television, become involved in community affairs. + Avoid escapes— Avoid daydreaming, sleeping too much and watching too much television. When you do dream, make sure it is of obtainable goals that you can achieve in the near future. + Choose to be happy— Ask yourself, “How does my unhappiness change the situa- tion?” Most of the time, the answer will be “It doesn’t; it just makes it worse.” Fight depression by joining a self- help group or talking with friends, counselors and clergy- men to help put yourself in a good frame of mind. Make life better by improving your atti- tude and being happy. + Collect good thoughts— Read and collect funny jokes, meaningful poems and great literary masterpieces. Memo- rize some of those inspira- tional passages and good thoughts, and share them with whomever you meet. In time, people will seek out your com- panionship and happy thoughts. + Join a social group— Visit and join the various social groups in your commu- nity to meet people and make new friends. Commit yourself to one or more groups that you find interesting. * Go to church—Most reli- gious institutions care for peo- ple and treat all who attend like family. If you are friendly, chances are the institution will be friendly in return.
