CASTLEGAR NEWS, Thursday, December 1, 1977 After Rockers’, Rockettes’ Successful Season Opening Hosts Blue & Gold Basketball Tourney The 1977-1978 basketball season got underway at Stanley Humphries Secondary School last Thursday as the Senior Rockettes and Senior Rockers played host to visiting teams from Grand Forks... The first game of the doubleheader waaa cliffhanger, with the Dwayne Command, Tomorrow afternoon the Eighth Annual Blue and Gold Basketball Tournament gets underway at Stanley Hum- phries. For the seeond year ina row the tournament combines boys and girls teams. The six girls teams are Kelowna Sec- out a one point victory, 38-37. Leading the Rockettes in scor- ing was Liz DaCosta with 10 points, The boys’ game was also extremely close with the Rock- ers coming out on top of the. Wolves 61-58, Co-captain Paul Wearmouth topped all scorers, hooping 18 points for the Rockers. Rookies Greg Heuer and Ken Kinakin also turned in strong offensive performances for the Castlegar team. This year's Rocker squad ! has only two returning seniors ? so nine new faces have been CLYDE LENS TD AS added to the roster. The team plans to make up for its lack-of height and senior experience by emphasizing tough. defensive play and lots of hustle. Co-captain Les Gyurkovits is back from last year and as the Rocker’s tallest player will have an important role. New names to watch for include Tom Thor-Larsen, Greg Heuer, Ken ondary, P » Creston, Nelson, K.L.O, Secondary from Kelowna,. and the host Rock- ettes. Over on the boys side the Rockers are joined by Nelson, K.L.O. Secondary, and St. Mary's School from Calgary. .
